Starskaters has been a blessing. We first learned about them at an Disability Expo. My son was a hockey fan and had always dreamed about playing other sports after serving as trainer for the varsity football team his 4 years in Highschool, but actually being a completing player, he only thought it would be a dream of his never a reality. He had tried some of the wheelchair basketball but he just didnt have the ability to shoot the ball and he struggled too much, in addition to the fact that it wasnt his true love, hockey.
From the 1st day we were there, they set him up in a sled and in no time, he got the opportunity of a lifetime, he got to travel to PA to participate in the National Sled Hockey tournament. In fact, his first true competitive game he ever played was the first roud of the tournament. SO his beginning experience kind of hooked him. We have rarely missed a Saturday ever since that Saturday in August of 2012. In fact, my wife and I have committed our Saturdays that we dont have to work as being volunteers, including the tournament trips where we are needed. For as long as Andy is part of the team, we will be the most committed and tried and true volunteers they have, as far as our help goes, but they have so many others that commit to this great cause simply because it is such a great cause, and a great group of people doing such a wonderful thing. Most everyone that starts to be involved with starskaters quickly becomaes a member of our Hockey family and that is what we are a family. So we continue to invite people to come out on Saturday and try it. It is always free and you will probably be like us, and become hooked. We have been away for the last 3 weeks due to being sick and the holidays and it is just killing us. We gotta get back so meet us there next Saturday, at Memorial City Mall at 10 am. We learned of this great group last August at the Accessibility Expo and our Son who was born with Spina Bifida has really grown in so many areas, thanks to Star Skaters. He has always loved hockey and been a huge fan. Star Skaters has given him the opportunity to participate in the sports he loves so much. My wife has volunteered each Saturday since and as soon as I was physically able, I have been helping as well.
This organization and the people behind it care so much for the people who need these services. They go the extra mile in helping the guys and gals with anything from ingenious equipment modifications to ice time and other needs.
Just talking to the skaters and players, they say that they feel an incredible amount of freedom on the ice, and that makes it all worth while.
Special thanks to Jim O'Neil and Ken Belknap and so many others that give so much. I receive so much more than I give to this group and you will too should you decide to become involved.
