BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA

Working with the Boys & Girls Club of the Mississippi Delta this past summer was one of the greatest highlights of my life. As a physician, I was accustomed to meeting and greeting patients from all walks of life, children included. Yet, I had never met anyone quite like the children and staff of the Club! The children soaked up information like a sponge and even created a music video during my time there. The staff were competent, professional and caring. Their desire to be right there with the children everyday was evident and spoke volumes about their character. Specifically, Mr. Deming welcomed me as a volunteer and his director of the club, Ms. Stacye Allen, ensured that every resource was made available to me to conduct the workshops I sponsored. It was evident during my time there that she is an excellent leader.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

July 2010 when I had the honorable opportunity to witness the children put on a fantastic "end of summer/back to school" show. It was phenomenal! Several of the children came up to me and said, "Thank you for coming and teaching us, Dr. Liddell!" Although they had not seen me for several weeks leading up to their show, they recognized me as soon as I walked inside of the building. Although I am a very busy physician, I plan to always show up at the Boys & Girls Club of the MS Delta as often as possible

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Replicate the Boys & Girls Club a million times over and establish one in every single rural area in America!

My volunteer experience was extraordinarily wonderful; therefore, at this time, I have no recommendations about how they could improve my volunteer experience.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

Absolutely! Meeting Mr. Deming, Ms. Allen and Mr. Doty taught me that there are still people in the world who believe that one person can still make a difference in a child's life. Their own personal stories are amazing as well. I thank God for affording me the opportunity to meet them, the other staff members and above all, the children, with whom I interacted.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

This volunteer experience made me feel that there is still so much work left to do in terms of inspiring young people and helping to build their self esteem and self-confidence. It made me feel sad also, because there are still so many needs that the Boys & Girls Club has and I cannot meet them all!

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2011

MY ROLE:

Volunteer & Conducted workshops about how to overcome various obstacles that occur in life, including poverty and failing school grades. Also, I arranged for a fence to be fixed that had been hanging down over a sidewalk since a tornado had gone through the town.
