My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Trenton, NJ, USA
I am an ESL teacher in Mercer County, with a rapidly growing Latino student body. As this is my 34th year of teaching, I have worked with many, many students in other states and even other countries, and yet I have never felt so drawn to the families of the children I teach. All are immigrants eager to contribute to their new society, better the educational chances of their children, and live law-abiding, productive lives. Fortunately for them, LALDEF is thriving in the greater Princeton area. I have directed many families to its services, invited speakers to our parents' group, and publicized its events through my school. With its mission of service, education and advocacy, with its outstanding leadership, wide-reaching programs, and determination to uphold the dignity of every human life, the families I work with have been guided, supported and brought closer to their dream: a productive life as valued members of American society, a society built on the success of its immigrants. LALDEF gets results for its client base because it is neither abrasive nor confrontational. It delivers its message in an intelligent, peaceful, educational way and because of this, good things happen and justice is served.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
many ways...seeing a woman given the courage to report a physically abusive incident; watching 25 families as they hear for the first time that there are free services available to all residents of the town, even immigrants; witnessing a young family tearfully aided by a caring, intelligent lawyer; knowing that hundreds of individuals now have an official "ID."
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Attach a representative in each school district to work directly with their Guidance offices.
