Review for Neuroendocrine Cancer Awareness Network Inc, Fort Mill, SC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

When neuroendocrine cancer hit the Wahman family, it resulted in an explosion... not the usual destructive kind...but the creation of a non-profit organization and website with dissemination of information about NETs , a help-line, and the coordination of recurring patient-oriented conferences which bring world-renowned experts to the patients who urgently need the up-to-date help in their battles against these orphan tumors.
Their incredible efforts have resulted in life-saving rescues of patients often struggling to stay afloat without the answers needed to diagnose and treat their rare cancers which often go undiagnosed for years because of physicians' lack of adequate knowledge about the patients' diseases. The results of NCAN's dissemination of knowledge has benefited not only the patients touched by these efforts but their health-care teams as well! NCAN's efforts are not only extraordinary... they are the gift that keeps giving, year after year!!

NCAN has, for years, been consistently supportive of NET patients, their families and their doctors in the common goal of doing what's right for the patients. This focus is what makes NCAN stand out!

For years, CCAN has been there for Carcinoid/NET patients, and they strive steadfastly to educate the medical community about these orphan tumors. CCAN is there for you...they deserve to have all of us in their corner as well.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Emphasize the need to fight insurance carrier denials and help prevent patient/family bankruptcy by helping to negotiate with drug companies which provide the costly medications.

How does this organization compare with others in the same sector?

Very Well

CCAN is the result of a truly dedicated team focused on the support of Carcinoid/Neuroendocrine patients and their families.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I've participated in a patient-oriented conference sponsored by CCAN.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Perhaps the single suggestion one could make would be to ensure that NET physicians are available to discuss specific patient questions as they are raised. I recall reading with some pain the story of a patient who travelled to South America for surgery for a Carcinoid lesion of the heart when 5 prior patients with a similar problem had been managed with targeted nonsurgical therapy by the Mt. Sinai team in NYC. This type of patient could benefit from appropriate physician input at a critical time.

Role:  Professional with expertise in this field & I've observed the Wahmanns at national and international Carcinoid/NET conferences; their dedication has been incredibly consistent.
