Storehouse West, incorporated in 1992, is an volunteer-staffed, community-supported food pantry assisting residents of Sandoval County. We give a week''s supply of food to qualifying low-income families and Senior Citizens and those having short-term emergencies, such as a job loss, husband leaving, loss of food stamps or unexpected additional family members living with them. Clients'' children to teen years are eligible to receive gently-used clothing plus new underwear and socks. Some Federal Emergency Management Agency funds are received to assist those with rent/mortgage and utility bills. We are very supportive of the philosophy of the Dept. of Human Services and are firm in encouraging applicants to take advantage of the Dept. of Labor assistance in job finding, Food Stamps, Medicaid, and the other various job training programs available.
Our main purpose is to assist low-income families and Senior Citizens with a week's supply of food. This includes two frozen meats, many canned items including vegetables, fruits, beans, peanut butter and jelly, soups, tuna fish, tomato products, canned meat, plus crackers, cereals, pasta, rice, pinto beans. Milk, margarine, eggs, and cheese are given when possible. Donated baked goods from supermarkets are offered as are produce when donated. Federal Commodities are distributed to Senior Citizens monthly, some who pick up at the agency. We deliver to over one hundred Seniors in Sandoval County, some to their homes, and others to the local Senior Center where they pick up the food. We publish simple recipes and cooking instructions several times a year. Our bulletin boards offer job and training opportunities and information about other agencies offering other types of assistance. Our Kids Clothes Closet provides gently-used clothing for children from birth through middle school age, new socks and underwear plus Dress Code clothing for the various school districts. We are staffed by volunteers who work very hard carrying and sorting donated canned goods and clothing, picking up donations from schools, homes, etc., and keeping the building neat and clean. We are constantly in touch with our County and City agencies and the schools to provide up-to-date information for those who need our services. There is utility assistance from the Good Neighbor Fund and the EFSP funding, rent/mortgage from the EFSP program, dress code assistance for the Rio Rancho School District, and Waste Management assistance for Rio Rancho
