The Art of Living Foundation conducts breathing courses (pranayama), yoga and meditation that truly help transform people for the better. They are dedicated to eradicating violence from society, and to eliminating stress from individuals. I felt elated after doing my first course, and now, after having done many, including the Advanced Course, I am no longer an angry, vengeful person; I have really changed. The Art of Living Foundation runs courses in the Port Philip High Security Prison in Victoria, Australia, as well as in prisons in India, and the inmates all transform from violent men bent on revenge, into friendly, calmer people. It's amazing! The breath is the link between body and mind, and through safe breathing techniques, pent-up stress that can lead to violence is eliminated from the body, making one feel lighter, clearer, happier. I highly recommend that everyone do the Art of Living Course. In fact, during the George Bush Jnr presidency, all NASA scientists were funded to do the Art of Living Course as part of their job induction, as it was seen that those who had completed the course performed better at work. The Art of Living also does much service to society, all by volunteers, especially when disasters strike, like Hurricane Katrina, and the first Tsunami that struck India and Thailand, rushing in to provide trauma relief to the victims. They are a wonderful Foundation, and one that I'm proud to be a part of.
In traveling around the world, I have encountered many people who have contributed humanitarian and PTSD relief for this organization. One gentleman spent a long time telling me how he got members of opposing sides in a ten-year bloody conflict to participate in the personal development/breathing programs. Some had killed hundreds of people. They were transformed and lighter after the program and went back and got others to participate. After a couple years of this the class violence in the region stopped entirely. I saw a presentation by a researcher who documented that tsunami survivors getting the trauma relief program recovered from PTSD in as little as eight hours (remarkable). I also received information from or about several teachers and volunteers who provided free programs after 9/11 and Katrina, as well as in Kosovo, Iraq, and to Iraq and Vietnam war veterans, telling me how many could sleep through the night for the first time. A large high school administration gave them the toughest kids to try the kids program out on. They are now rolling it out to the entire school. (It has apparently successfully implemented in many inner city schools.) I was introduced to them by taking the breathing/life skills program they offer to the public. I didn't know it would have such a dramatic positive effect on my mental and physical state. I like this organization because their results are so obvious, concrete, and immediate, and cut across class, gender, age, religious, and cultural lines.
