When reviewing the website of dogs available I was looking for an older dog. When sending an email about the older dog that had been in the kennel for years, they said the dog had been adopted. I asked if there were any other dogs that met the qualities I was looking for. They said they had a few to meet. We drive over an hour round trip, more than once, also bring our current dog to meet them, are all set to adopt, then they denied the adopt with bogus statement, which had to be a generic statement about spay/neutering pets (which any pet I have ever owned has been neutered) vaccinations (again dog is up to date with) (I should question is the human there are vaccinated) indoor/ out door cats (which I don't have any cats), declawing of cats, which again don't have a cat, as well as would never do to a cat... Plus I was adopting a dog, which the current one I have was adopt about 10yrs ago. People can't believe is she as old as she is because she is in great health. I have read some of the other reviews, and agree, they are "Karens".

Horrible experience! They will decline your application and not even tell you why?!

The adoption process was not smooth. I verified all my information with them and was told I have to wait a week to adopt the pet. After I filled out the application, they declined it the day after stating they couldn’t give a reason. The whole point is to provide the pets with a safe and loving home and they make it difficult to achieve that goal.

I went two weeks ago to the York Co Humane society to adopt a cat. I applied with my husband , went through the application, had them verify with our vet and then waited with no response. Called everyday for the last week and was told the Director had not been in and to check back the next day and watch for an email. It has been over a week and now they don’t even answer the phone If this is how they operate then I don’t think they would ever get these poor animals adopted. I don’t understand why no one will contact me and leaving me to wonder what is going on. I would not recommend this facility to anyone. Sad that this animal now won’t get a great home because these folks are so thoughtless Very sad day we fell in love with the cat and now she will miss out on a loving family.

I have never met a more caring, hard working, and loving animal adoption agency than HSYC. I called to learn about dogs available for adoption a few weeks ago. The staff and volunteers were extremely friendly and asked great questions about my home/family to help understand what would be a good fit, then recommended several dogs based on the information I shared. I mentioned a few dogs I saw online, they provided great information about the animals, their personalities, needs, and it helped me decide if they could be a potential great fit for my family. I set up a few appointments to meet some animals, and now my whole family is in love with our new addition thanks to the HSYC! The people running this shelter understand how to rehab and prepare animals to find a great fit in a forever home, regardless of their past circumstances. The animals are clearly well cared for and loved by many at the shelter, preparing them for easy transitions into new homes upon adoption. I cannot recommend this shelter enough if you’re serious about finding a great fit for your family. The time, effort, & love the HSYC puts into their animals and adoption process is worth it for the people & animals involved. Blessed beyond words for this shelter connecting my family with the perfect dog. He is 6 years old and more amazing than thought possible!

My family and I adopted our dog, Tyson, through York County HS about 3 years ago and to this day, I am humbled by the employees and volunteers who spend their days cleaning after and caring for these animals! We visit regularly and are ALWAYS greeted with kindness, love and smiles, even after three years!! It is this type of compassion and caring that brings joy to our wonderful community!!!

I have a special place in my heart for you all. My family and I thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for all you do to make this world a better place for all of us!!

I am very proud, and consider myself lucky, to donate to such an incredible organization!!

I've been volunteering with the HSYC for several years. I am responsible for fund raising and work with amazing people. We are a family at the HSYC (staff and volunteers alike). With a family we have disagreements but at the end of the days....it's all about the animals.

We work diligently to make needed funds to support our no kill shelter. We currently house 140+ cats/kittens and about 40-50 dogs/pups. We also have a thrift shop that's focus is to make money to support our cause. Together the thrift shop and the shelter along with the business of running the shelter costs $32K a month. We regularly request donation of items and when spending act as if we are conservatively spending our own dollars when making decisions about our shelter.

Our shelter is a very positive place to visit. Our staff is paid very little and works with a passion for the animals.

As the fund raising coordinator, I feel very respected and appreciated for the activities I coordinate. However, I cannot do it alone and I have an amazing group of people I work with that makes every day a pleasure. It takes a community to make this all work. As an organization and as a volunteer, I regularly direct people to other rescues ...even Animal Control to find the pet that fits with the family's need. We work toward the common goal of finding the right fit for pet and family but bottom line we are the pet's advocate no matter what.

After I made a sizable donation to this group, I realized a few things and I regret not having checked further into their financials and procedures. Based on the amount of pets saved and the gross revenue for this group, I was surprised that comparitively speaking they are spending donation money . Look at the numbers they reported closely. Why, they are taking in so many cats and puppies are they not offering a spay and neuter clinic? Wouldn't it be in everybody's best interest to work on stopping the problem rather than only housing pets. When they reach their limit then what happens? I also do not see any colaboration and all donors know that with the animal concerns now a days it is essential that groups work together and also offer spay and neuter. Whoever is in charge of making these decisions needs to totally redirect their efforts with the goal in mind to reduce population and find as many good homes as possible through networking. NEXT TIME I WILL BE SURE TO PUT MY MONEY ELSEWHERE. I CANNOT EVEN GET THEM TO ANSWER THE PHONES!
