I have followed this organization for a couple years now. Two aspects come to mind that really set WEI apart from other projects: The mission is not about 'hand-outs', but rather funding entrepreneurial training and opportunities. The loans not only provide a lifeline for the receiving entrepreneur and family; by creating new businesses they also support the community, both economically and socially. Ms. Murphy's passion, intelligence and drive to make a difference are evident after even a short conversation. Those traits are reflected by everyone involved in the organization, and are the reason that WEI will be very successful.
WEI is one of the most important groups among nonprofits. It is truly nonprofit, Heather takes no compensation. I think I can safely say that 100% of donations go directly to those the organization serves.
I have witnessed the creation of this organization from the ground up and am extremely impressed with both its mission and the leadership and vision of its founders. It is for these reasons that I agreed to serve on the Board of Directors and make donations of my own this worthy cause.
I have been involved with WEI since its inception... and I can say that Heather and her subordinates, give their all, dedicate their time and energies and their personal time and resource to the benefit and creation of WEI. Their vision began as a personal quest to make things different for those women around the world who find themselves widowed. After research and travel to the most remote areas of India, she (Heather) found that she could assist the women and thier small children. She does not enable, rather gives these women the tools to create their own destiny! An empowering position for any woman! Heather and her team train women in skills that allow them to make valuable and important decisions for their loved ones! They become self sufficient and able to support their children, a gift in any society or economic class. Heather has single handedly met with many potential supporters and been seen on local television expressing very accurately the need for all to become aware of the world and to do what we can, as individuals and groups to make the world a better place.
Heather has totally sacrificed all monetary rewards for herself, even placing further education at this time to assist these women in India, she is truly an altrustic young woman. She has chosen to work up fromt his small beginning rather than join a large organziation to be sure all funds, assist go directly to the women in need, she pays her own pay for trips to India, to facilitate her plans for them, She is innovative, and willing to go out on a limb, to do all necessary to advance the womens education and skill levels. She attempts to network and go wherever she can to get even small amounts just to move forward, for the children she has met and the women who are counting on her
Heather’s commitment to this cause is truly exemplary and commendable. Having grown up in India, I have seen first hand the abject poverty suffered by widows of farmers. These widows are very hardworking, intelligent, sincere, and conscientious workers and Heather’s compassionate organization is ideally structured to leverage these traits to help better their lot and that of future generations.
We have been fortunate in knowing Heather for many years. We are very proud of her drive and commitment to WEI and its objectives. We are amazed by the energy and and dedication that Heather has put into creating WEI and striving to have a positive impact on the lives of a group of women in a country far removed from us in the USA. We plan on continuing to support WEI in whatever way we can and would encourage everyone to support WEI through whatever means possible.
On a weekly basis our financial advisory firm gets to see WEI in action and discuss the various business aspects of WEI with Heather Murphy, one of the founders of WEI. We are always impressed at the detailed planning that goes into making WEI happen. Management of this organization is going to be key to reaching out to the largest number of women in need in India. We need more organizations like this and more people like Heather willing to act on their compassion toward needy individuals.
I was so touched by the courage and energy shown by this organization in helping widows make their own way. This organization has it right! By making loans and grants and helping women set up their own support systems - and then promoting the "Pay It Forward" concept - the women will be able to provide support int he future. Very professional and responsive organization.
This program is truly giving and a wonderful way to promote development in and out of the United States. Heather puts everything into the support of these women and development in positive ways in India. Not only is she supporting these women to independently support themselves and their families, she is doing so in a way that does not disturb the natural system of culture or economics that is present in the society. By providing opportunities with sewing machines and start up money for small out of home businesses WEI is creating a great effect in a positive way without changing the outsider society around it.
