I first joined the Women’s Education Project (WEP) when the organization launched its Ambassador volunteer program back in January 2010. In a small workspace in Brooklyn, we met regularly over tea and light appetizers to help stuff and address envelopes, brainstorm ideas and help the President of the organization in any way we could. During my time with the organization, I’ve met a terrific group of young professionals, who are dedicated to enhancing the mission of the organization: WEP provides scholarships for young women in India from poor families to achieve career dreams, because in India women are more likely to lack the support and resources to attend college. Since January, the Ambassador program has evolved and now has subcommittees or teams that volunteers can join based on their interests. These include Events, Social Media, and Athletics. As a member of the social media team I have been very involved in the design of WEP’s Facebook page and have now taken on the additional responsibility working as a co-manager for the PR team. The Ambassador program is great because it allows volunteers to take on leadership roles within the organization. I’ve come a long way from stuffing envelopes back in January, and it feels very rewarding to know that the work I do as an Ambassador for WEP helps young women succeed in college, career and life.
