Mission: Watkins Obolus was founded to enhance and support the Premier Boys State of Illinois and Illini Girls State youth citizenship programs. As a strictly volunteer-based organization, our members actively search for exceptional Illinois high school students to educate in the democratic political process in the hope that we can convince highly-motivated and highly-qualified students to pursue careers in public service. Our goals for our "citizens" are robust; while we one day dream of training a future President, we are focused on growing our next generation of leadership at the city and state level. As such, our motto is: "Mount Rushmore has room. Illinois has need."
Programs: Watkins Obolus provides scholarships: (a) to cover the cost of attendance at Boys or Girls State (and transportation) and (b) for post-secondary education. We hope to sponsor up to 750 Boys and Girls Staters each year and provide approximately $50,000 in scholarships to be used for post-secondary education. All students in Illinois are eligible for both types of scholarship.
