Mission: Volunteers of America is a national, faith-based organization with a mission to reach and uplift all people in need. Founded in 1896 as an organization of volunteers who worked tirelessly to help the city's poor, today Volunteers of America-Greater New York employs more than 1,400 professional staff. In 2004, Volunteers of America guided thousands of troubled individuals toward personal change and away from homelessness, addiction, untreated mental illness and intergenerational poverty. We helped our clients develop and follow comprehensive treatment plans. We provided services that enabled parents to realistically envision a hopeful future for their families. Over the past year, thousands of people entered our programs with little hope and left empowered and determined, with the tools required to make great strides toward a positive and independent life.
