Programs: Accelerating next-generation immunization supply chains (isc): villagereach works with ministries of health to design and implement "next-generation" immunization supply chains to reach all children currently without access to vaccines. Along with our direct work with governments and their partners to implement new supply chain designs in mozambique, drc, tanzania and pakistan, the organization also drives change globally through advocacy, evidence-generation, and partnerships that encourage additional countries to initiate and expand efforts to improve immunization supply chains.
openlmis - improving health logistics at the last mile: openlmis, an open source logistics management information system designed to manage health commodities in low resource environments. Openlmis increases data visibility for logistics, ensuring efficient delivery of vaccines and other essential medicines. Villagereach is the leading developer and implementing partner of openlmis, deployed in multiple countries by partners throughout sub-saharan africa.
chipatala cha pa foni (health center by phone): together with partners, villagereach developed and operates chipatala cha pa foni (ccpf) or health center by phone, a mobile-based health hotline in malawi. Ccpf provides access to trained health workers who provide health information, advice and referrals over the phone. Through ccpf, pregnant women and mothers also receive text and voice messages on reproductive, maternal and newborn health topics based on their child's age. Through partnership with the malawi government and private sector partners, ccpf continues to expand in scope and scale, bridging a critical gap in health care access for remote communities.
The best medicines can't help anyone if the people who need them do not have access to them. VillageReach works in neglected rural areas in developing countries to help set up distribution systems to help bring medicines to those in need. GiveWell the independent charity evaluators also note that VillageReach is highly unusual for the amount of information it shares about what it does and this alone may be a good reason to consider giving to them because the more data they have the more it can help other groups working in the field. By collecting the data it also means that VillageReach can keep improving by going with what works.
It can sometimes be hard to know how much say immunizations have gone up in an area because of VillageReach's efforts as oppose to the work of others. That said even groups like GiveWell who say that VR may not be responsible for as much of the increase as originally thought they still say there is evidence that they are effective and are increasing coverage.
The other benefit to VillageReach is that part of their role is to help governments take over once they have gone as oppose to just running a program for a few years that ends once they leave. Although there has been difficulties with programs lasting once they exit they are working on it.
