Causes: Civil Rights, Consumer Protection
Mission: Founded in 1972, the vermont public interest research group
Programs: Consumer protection - vpirg serves as a watchdog, protecting the public interest when corporations attempt to put profits over people, and ensures that the policies and laws that we do pass to protect the public interest are in fact enforced. Years of work with partners in the right to know gmos coalition paid off in 2014 when vermont became the first state to pass a law requiring gmo foods to be labeled. Vpirg advocates and organizers spent much of 2013 and 2014 mobilizing tens of thousands of vermonters in support of the campaign. Vpirg's massive grassroots effort culminated in the delivery of more than 30,000 postcards to lawmakers, who subsequently passed the final legislation overwhelmingly. Despite this broad support, industry groups were quick to take legal action aimed at killing the law before it would be implemented. Vpirg/vpiref has partnered with the vermont law school and the center for food safety to defend the law in court. Our team was granted amici curiae (friend of the court) status for the duration of the case and filed our first briefs in november.

Vpirg works to advance policies and programs that aim to stop our continued reliance on fossil fuels and other dirty energy like nucl
democracy and fair elections - vpirg actively supports efforts to make our democracy more open and transparent. We seek to ensure that elections are fair and balanced by reducing the undue influence of money in our political process.
