Vera Institute of Justice helped lay the groundwork in North Carolina for the Justice Reinvestment Act. Ultimately, the legislative changes that resulted from the JRA of 2011 will save the State millions of dollars. It will also help to ensure the punishments fit the crime.

I cannot even give a one rating to this organization. This non-profit is one of the most notoriously fraudulent we have witnessed. Their public relations arm is absolutely fantastic at duping public and private contributors into giving millions. Hidden from the public eye is their secret of co-opting with the Brooklyn Supreme Court to steal widows of color out of their life savings and brownstones in regentrifying neighborhoods like Ocean Hills.

Ten years ago, under Article 81 (guardianship) Vera's "counsel" sat silent while the Brooklyn Supreme Court judge striped our mother, a clearly articulate, cognizant and vibrant 72-year-old woman, of all her constitutional rights, property, retirement savings, social security, and New York Teacher Retirement marshalling 35 years of her life's work before she even entered the courtroom’s 2 hour “hearing”.

Within this “hearing”, my mother was denied her attorney of choice, she was denied a trial by jury, she was told she could not testify for herself, which she insisted on doing anyway, to the chagrin of the judge. The court appointed attorney, rather than raising one word in defense of my mother, sat in court room crying beside my mother who had to defend herself.

Fearing being placed in a nursing home of Vera’s choice, drugged and starved like other victims of guardianship she had heard about, and rather than succumbing to The Supreme courts demand to return to court, my mother, with myself, husband and my sister's help, fled the United States for her beloved Belize. She returned to the United States only to go before the US Congress, conduct interviews with The Washington DC newspaper and radio stations to tell her story AFTER Vera allowed her to be ruled "incapacitated".

Vera, instead of releasing this clearly non-incapacitated woman from their grips, enhanced their assault on this retired NYC school teacher. Over the next 10 years of conscription, they released her “Person” but retained guardianship of her property. Rather than attempting to free my mother from the guardianship, as required by law, Vera strategically allowed her 2 Ocean Hills properties to go into disrepair. Rather than performing required maintenance, Vera just paid the Department of Building fines from my mother’s estate which Vera had fully marshalled BEFORE my mother even entered the courtroom 10 years earlier.

Of My mother ’s approximate annual $78,000 pension, investment income, rentals, Social Security, NYC Teacher Retirement fund, Vera gave her $1,000 a month out of her own money and stopped 3 years ago after they were reported to Social Security for fraud. Vera claimed, in their reporting to Social Security, that they were giving her the Social Security for the previous 7 years. They were not doing so and now under investigation by Social Security for fraud. Vera kept everything else for themselves paying their own attorneys, court evaluators and friends from my mother ’s estate.

Then in 2019, after 9 years of public exposure, Vera’s Director of the Guardianship Project, said she was going to "release" my mother from the guardianship. They are now doing so -- into the hands of the two sons my mother had not only disowned, but who had brought the guardianship to Vera in the first place. These two “sons” are both crack addicts, wife beaters, and have police records. Both are former NYC correction officers dismissed under scurrilous conditions. Both these “sons” have also physically, emotionally and financially abused my mother and neither have neither seen nor spoken to her for 10 years.

Vera’s salaried attorney, knowing this history, vowed in court that these two sons are fit to be my mother’s “new” guardians.

After 9 years of medical evaluations submitted to Vera showing my mother ’s competency, Vera, who has not seen nor heard from her for the past 10 years, continue to abuse her, deem her incapacitated, turn her over to known criminals, abusive sons even with medical and criminal evidence to the contrary. This organization is hardly the johnny-do-gooders their well paid for PR efforts proport them to be. DO NOT TRUST A WORD THEY SAY.

Vera is a grossly negligent, dishonest and callous organization. It masquerades as a 3rd party guardian for people in need. My sister fell victim to having Vera as her guardian. As she had Cancer, she was in a battle for her life. Also, she had Diabetes and emotional challenges. Under Vera, what happened to her? She deteriorated and she had extensive hospitalizations. Rarely, did Vera come to the hospital to oversee her care. Vera was not involved in major decisions about her medical treatment. Nor, did the organization significantly advocate for her. In fact, under Vera, she languished in one hospital so long, (six months) that she caught a staff infection! As her sister, I tried to assist her as best I could. Another family member made inquiries about her as it was clear something in her life was extremely wrong. Ultimately, a separate city agency stepped in to help her.

What did Vera care about? Money!

From my sister's Social Security check, which Vera had control of, every month, hundreds of dollars were missing. Vera gave phony excuses for the missing money such as...they were holding her money in case my sister went to assisted living; another excuse Vera gave was that...there was a freeze on her money! One month, one of my sister's social workers tried to steal $630.00 out of an $830.00 Social Security check! Only when I threatened to complain to Social Security did Vera suddenly realize that it had made a "mistake" and gave back to my sister, $500.00. What did Vera do with the other $330.00?

One time, Vera placed my sister in an assisted living facility. The facility was dilapidated and the elevators rarely worked. Baldy, in this environment, my sister deteriorated. Because of her Cancer and her mismanaged circumstances, she needed repeated hospitalizations and blood transfusions. Under Vera, from her home, my sister was evicted. Bluntly, Vera told me that if I didn't provide my sister (their client) with housing, they would place her in a homeless shelter. My sister cried.

My sister continued to decline.

Under Vera, she died May 27, 2019.

Against Vera, lawsuits should be filed. The organization should be shut down! If you are an attorney, willing to accept my case, to reach a negligence settlement with Vera, please contact me at Silvereagle124@yahoo.com

Asking for attorney inquiries.

The Vera Institute for Justice is a groundbreaking nonprofit. It's co-founder, Herb Sturz is an unsung hero in the NYC nonprofit sector. I value two things about Vera. First, it's research is accessible, quality and timely and well placed to really inform practice and policy. You know, it "moves the needle." Second, as an organization, the very thought that one would "spin-off" programs is remarkable. This tells me that Vera is a humble organization. They recognize the value of incubating new ideas/programs and then letting them go when the time is right to become independent. More nonprofits should take note of this smart strategy. Thanks Vera for your commitment to the sector, to promoting social justice and for continuing the good fight. Keep it up.
