Mission: Vashon youth and family services (vyfs) is a non-profit organization that has been providing human services to residents of vashon island, washington, for forty years. The agency began as a one-room organization providing limited counseling and job placement.
Programs: Behavioral health: vyfs enacts its mission to foster a thriving community of emotionally healthy and resilient children, youth, adults and families by providing low to no barrier access to individual, family, and group counseling for residents of a rural and geographically isolated island. Vyfs also provides bilingual case management, free crisis stabilization, a substance use disorder (sud) program, and wellness vouchers for the health needs of low income island residents. As vashon's only licensed behavioral health agency, vyfs provided 3,714 hours of counseling and case management to 249 individuals and 225 families, including 282 direct service hours of free or uncompensated care in 2017.
vashon kids: vashon kids provides dependable, creative, and culturally competent before and after school enrichment for 5 to 12-year-olds. Programming, delivered by experienced staff, encourages personal and social growth through healthy play, the acceptance of differences, and peaceful conflict resolution while supporting each child's dignity and perspective. During the school year staff assist children with homework and collaborate with chautauqua educators to provide additional learning opportunities in coordination with school curriculum and events. Academic and enrichment activities and clubs focus on science, art, humanities, literacy, healthy eating, and sports. Vk served 167 kids from 132 families in 2017.
family place: family place provides activities and services designed to bring parents and caregivers of birth to 6 year-olds together to form social support networks and increase understanding of child development. Fp organizes the vashon early learning coalition network of educators and care providers and offers the following programs and services: parents as teachers, a comprehensive early childhood home visiting program, bilingual kaleidoscope play & learn groups, play 'n' chat discussion group, childcare for parent's night out, drop-in childcare, parent education classes, parent discussion groups, and developmental screenings to island children. In 2017 fp served 550 individuals from 157 families.
