Mission: The choir's mission is to inspire and change lives through music by providing choral education and performance opportunities to chicago youth from diverse backgrounds.
Programs: Voice of chicago is chicago children's choir's premier ensemble, comprising over 100 singers, ages 12-18, who reflect the city's rich cultural diversity. Singers selected for voice of chicago ensemble display proficiency in vocal technique, musicality, sight-reading and movement. Tuition is based on a sliding scale. With a minimum of 5 hours of rehearsal weekly, voc maintains an extensive performance schedule. Within voc, singers have the opportunity to audition for select mixed ensemble, "encore", and select dance ensemble, "encore groove". Additionally, select voc singers tour to share ccc's mission with new audiences and artistic collaborators around the globe, this year travelling to italy.
the neighborhood choir program provides beginning and intermediate choral training to students in 9 neighborhoods throughout chicago. In fy17, the ncp served 700 diverse students: 42% african american, 27% latino, 20% white, 5% asian and 6% other. Tuition is based on a sliding scale with some families paying as little as $50 per year. Students build community pride and stewardship while learning about vocal technique, music theory, discipline, musicality and movement. Beginning and intermediate level ensembles are typically offered at each neighborhood choir location. Two locations offer a third more advanced ensemble for students with more mature voices. Ncp singers have opportunities to perform in their communities, on the stages of some of chicago's greatest cultural institutions and on domestic tours.
chicago children's choir partnered with 80 chicago schools, to form 104 choirs, which provided choral instruction to 3,800 students from october through may. Students from low-income households comprise the majority of the isp population with the following demographics: 43% african-american, 32% latino, 16% white, 5% asian and 4% other. Students who are chosen as members of these school choirs are given a choral experience focusing on basic musicianship and performance skills, a variety of reprertoire, and experiences to support the chicago children's choir mission. Isp students perform for members of their school cummunity and at two major chicago children's choir events: black history month concert series and paint the town red.
