Mission: Theater mitu is a non-profit, professional theater company that operates numerous educational, research, artistic producing and touring programs. Our mission is to expand the definition of theater through methodical experimentation with its form. The company investigates global performance as a source for our training, work, and methodologies. Our belief is that theater can create and strengthen communities through communication.
Programs: Juarez: a documentary mythology (nyc) - in 2012, mitu began the research and development of a new production focusing on the border community of el paso, tx & ciudad juarez, mexico. These sister cities, at times called the "second safest city per capita" in the usa, and "murder capital of the world", represent the new face of global border relations and development - especially in america. The company, following juarez-born and raised artistic director ruben polendo, traveled to the area to begin meeting with residents of the communities in attempt to gather their stories and experiences - family lore, community folktale, bar stool narrative, tales of memory, violence, fear and hope. In 2014 the company performed juarez twice in nyc - once in workshops performances at the rattlestick playwrights theater (january 2014), and a second time also at rattlestick as part of the theater:village festival (september 2014).
