I am passionate about the work that is being done by The Gretta Foundation in the area of training nurses in the third world. Easing the nursing shortage is one of the most effective ways we can help in bringing health and prosperity to suffering populations. Nurses work not only in their obvious field of health care delivery but also as role models and educators to wide populations in Africa. Unfortunately as many people are learning, there is a dire shortage of nurses in the world. The Gretta Foundation is dedicated to improving the quantity and quality of in-country nursing health care.

The mission and goals of The Gretta Foundation are so profoundly important at so many levels that I was immediately drawn to volunteer what assistance I could provide in fulfilling the Foundation's goals.

It is no news that we are facing a worldwide nursing shortage. Those that suffer most and will continue to suffer are in the poorest and most disease burdened countries in the world. The Gretta Foundation was founded to provide nursing scholarships to impoverished people in disease burdened nations. The model is easily replicable around the world; working with the national nursing association in each country to identify the best and most worthy candidates for scholarship. The program provides in-country nursing training to people in need, providing them a living stipend, room and board, books, uniform and medical supplies at a fraction of what it would cost in the Western world. Students begin assisting overburdened healthcare programs in their country as they learn. Upon graduation, nurses are bound to work in their country one year for each year of education; thereby mitigating the affects of "brain drain". For more information go to www.grettafoundation.org. The Gretta Foundation was founded in memory of the late Gretta Styles, former president of the International Council of Nurses, and the American Nurses Association.
