Mission: The Arc of Harris County was organized in 1984 as an affiliate of The Arc of Texas and The Arc of the United States. The Arc is a nonprofit organization formed at the national level in 1950 to advocate for the inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (e.d., mental retardation, autism, Down syndrome) in all aspects of society. Our chapter representatives serve on the Board of Directors of the state and national Arc organizations, as well as on a number of state commissions that address disability issues. The Arc of Greater Houston works in collaboration with other agencies and organizations to facilitate the development of a wider array of options available to individuals and their families in our community. We are a member-based organization that relies on membership and program fees, contributions from corporations, foundations, individuals, and contracts to implement and expand our programs and services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc of Greater Houston has been instrumental in the creation of virtually every program, service, right, and benefit available to people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities in the Metropolitan Houston area.
