I have attended the Teens PACT "More then Just Sex" conference for several years now tabling to represent my agency. I have been most impressed by the leadership opportunity provided by this organization which empowers youth to tell their own story and give voice to the issues that most impact their lives everyday. This organization should be replicated nationwide as a place to help youth of color in particular gain the self confidence, organizing and leadership skills needed to succeed in life. These youth through their experience with Teen PACT are developing the hard and soft skills needed to negotiate many scenarios they face with their peers or adults and they develop critical thinking which will help them make healthier choices and not be as easily deterred by more negative influences in their lives and communities. The presentations on film by this group are great fun for their peers and also hit home with a message that makes young people think. And it teaches them real world marketable skills in making video/film to boot! Teen PACT is one of the best things that could happen for young people in NYC.
