I found StopGap Inc. while I was working on my undergraduate degree at KU. I was researching the likelihood of youth attending college after aging-out of the foster care system. What I learned from my research is that kids who age-out desperately want to attend college but they are poorly prepared for living on their own, for attending college, getting and keeping a job, and understanding their personal finances. StopGap, Inc. is a program that specifically addresses those life skills and works to improve the lives of those aging out of care. StopGap, Inc. is doing the work that these kids desperately need so they can have a chance at independence. If you are concerned about how 18-year-old's previously in state care will be able to afford housing, keep a job, enroll in school, and manage their finances, this is the organization you should support.
