Mission: Star, inc. , lighting the way, is a notfor-profit organization serving individuals of all ages with developmental disabilities, as well as providing support services to their families. We create opportunities for individuals to live full lives with independence, freedom of choice and personal growth by providing support, services and advocacy. We inform and encourage the community to recognize and appreciate the value of all individuals.
Programs: Star residential services are provided to 89 individuals with i/dd in a variety of options: dds licensed group homes (56 adults in 10 homes); in home support (8 adults in 6 apartments); licensed cla's: clustered apartments (20 adults in 8 apartments) continuous residential services (crs) (2 ladies in one home) and support in the individual's family home or apartment (3 adults). Residential supports include but are not limited to support in activities of daily living, meal planning and preparation, assistance in personal care, health care, medication administration, transportation and/or mobility training, up to 24 supervision, recreation, and counseling. Residential supports are individually designed and driven by the residents' needs.
star placed 16 new people in competitive employment with 65 jobs retained from previously placed. The average tenure of supported star employees is 9. 5 years with annual retention rate at 95%. Star participants is day support options volunteered over 3065 hours in the community this year. Over 110 star participants actively join in an actively growing list of classes in community settings (597 classes). Twenty-five people ages 48-85 participated in star's senior/adult day program. More than 20 individuals participated in star connections a program for adults with complex medical needs and idd.
286 children benefitted from star's birth to three programs. The services of star rubino family include speech, physical and occupational therapy, special education, parent support, social services, assistive technology and referral. 100% of children "reduced the gap" in their development when compared to same-aged peers (exceeding state target of 67%); 93. 1% children "caught up" to same-aged peers (exceeding state target of 59%); 100% of children exited birth to three with transition plans for future schooling.
over 52 families received family support assistance for their children 3-21. Support included: attending ppt meetings, iep planning, camp, day care, transition from school to adult services, college planning, dds eligibility, respite, identifying advocates, attorneys and accessing other community resources. Star hosted a 'meet and greet' in collaboration with dds for families who were interested in privately hiring staff to become in-home respite providers. Over 120 individuals participated in star recreation activities. 27 members of the star's self advocacy group meet the second tuesday of every month to discuss ongoing issues including staffing, money management and steps you need to take to be independent.
