Mission: We help more people discover how easy it can be to make a satisfying difference for our kids, for our environment, for our future...and often for all three at once.
Results: SCARCE began environmental education in 1990. We have reached an average of 30,000 people each year through our educational programs. Since inception, SCARCE has saved more than 7 million books from the landfill by redirecting them to schools and other nonprofits to help children and adults reach their educational potential. In addition, books that are not able to be reused due to condition and or age, are properly recycled. We divert an average of 8 tons of books from the landfill to the recycling center each week. SCARCE has been instrumental in writing 12 Illinois State Laws, some of which were used as a template for federal laws These laws range from prohibiting dangerous disposal of prescription and over the counter medications to the ability for state run organizations such as public schools to donate leftover food to their students or to others in need, rather than throw it out.
