Mission: To empower children and youth as valued family and community members through intergenerational shared-reading experiences.
Results: For Children: 1. Instills the joy of reading books 2. Provides positive role models 3. Grows feeling of self-worth with special attention received For Youth 1. Increases self-confidence resulting in more positive behavior 2. Instills the value of community service and family participation 3. Provides meaningful connections for children, youth and parents 4. Increases desire to complete high school and pursue future educational and career goals 5. Increases interest in reading 6. Increases awareness of importance of reading to children 7. Enhances relationships with adult family and community members For Adult Role Models/Family and Community Members: 1. Provides opportunities to interact and inspire children and youth 2. Target demographics: children, youth and families
Direct beneficiaries per year: 100 high school students, 201 pre-k children and 17 adults in one program; and 776 adults, 2931 children and 1287 family members in our second program
Programs: An after-school program that brings high school students and children together through reading aloud; and a parent workshop that connects families, affected by incarceration, through the read-aloud experience.
