I have been a tutor with this program for years and it is amazing. Being a tutor and being able to help a learner achieve their goals has been such a joy. I am humbled by the learners' enthusiasm and diligence. Learners are paired with tutors so that they can learn one-on-one and really focus on their goals. There are also classes available to learners to further help them on their journey to improve their English. I have seen how much these resources can help learners to gain confidence and move forward in their lives. It is just incredible!

I have been lucky enough to be a tutor with this program since 2013. Working with the students has been a life-changing experience for me. This program provides the students with a framework to help achieve their literacy goals. Being able to work with the students one on one means being able to be there and witness their journey as they fulfill their dreams. The students I have worked with have been so hardworking and dedicated - it is absolutely inspiring. The program offers tutoring as well as classes which set the students up for success. It is an incredible organization.
As a tutor, my involvement in Project Adult Literacy in Newport Beach, CA, is one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. To be blessed with the opportunity to help someone enrich his/her life by learning English thereby helping them communicate more effectively with other people, is a life-changing experience for the tutors as well as the learners. I witnessed the growth in reading, writing, verbal communication and overall self- confidence knowing that my learner could face the world, participate in the schools, community and workplace because of this program. And I learned so much about her country, culture, and history! In many ways, we were both teacher and learner! Finally, a scene that will be with me forever: At a gathering of both tutors and learners, I looked around at all those eager and grateful faces and said to myself, “The world is in this room, this very room, together!"
I really enjoy working with the Project Adult Literacy program through the Newport Beach library. (PAL)
I find it rewarding to meet the needs of adults that benefit from the program.
I’m proud to be a part of the library’s outreach to our community.
I have volunteered for Project Adult Literacy for many years. I have seen it grow with more volunteers and learners. Many of the learners take classes & grow with that. I’m very proud of Project Adult Literacy & its many volunteers when I see that a learner has graduated. We have helped that learner to fulfill some dreams.
I am a member of project adult literacy program since 2021.
All the staff, facilitators and tutors doing their best for the PAL members.
I have been progressing in English in various ways and getting adjusted in American Culture(life).
I hope to be a community helper when I am done this program. I am so grateful to the PAL program.
I heard about the PAL program from my friend two years ago. As she told me, all the teachers and program were great. From this year I found my time and thought I must try. Then l applied and later I got an email that I could join the orientation in Apr. That was exciting news.
In the orientation meeting we met Cherall. Her voice was soft and clear. I remember she encouraged us. If you want to learn English, you must set up your goal, not out of your reach. Step by step. Yes, I have my goal now.
Later I received a variety of classes and events from the PAL program. I really want to try a lot of classes. Considering my time schedule. I chose the evening book reading club first. To be honest, this is my first time reading a whole English book in my life. I'm always scared to read because too many new words stop me from continuing.
The book reading club chose the book of The Moment Of the Lift by Melinda French Gates. She wrote this book about how to empower women and lift up everyone. With club teacher Ray’s guidance we finally completed the book. I was encouraged in that moment. I felt I was also lifted by the PAL program. I could read more and learn more, maybe write more.
PAL also assigned an English tutor, Patty to me. She helped me to reach my goal and guided me for the new words of the book. She explained to me in very detail if I don’t understand it. My tutor knew I had a dog and gave me an English book called Bailey's Story. It was for middle school students. It’s easier than the first English book and I read it quickly. She also helped me for the writing. When I wrote down these words here it’s much easier and quick.
Although I only joined this program 5 months ago, I learned more English in PAL than in 5 years I had been in the US. The PAL program helped me open another window of the world. I try to read more news and books. When I get involved more deeply in English I know more about of US.
During the PAL's International Literacy Day we met our tutors, volunteers, program members and foundation supportors… I really appreciate these people who spend their time and their funds to build us such a great English learning environment. I hope one day I also could help the new people PAL.
I moved to USA in 2013 with my husband and my two little kids . I didn’t speak English but the library and his literacy program gave me a big help: I learned the language, I started to communicate with other people, school, and I made friends
I have participated in the Project Adult Literacy program for more than 10 years. I really appreciate the program giving me the opportunity to meet my tutor Phoebe and book club teachers Cathy and Ray, and many other volunteers. I learned a lot about American culture, history, and of course English reading and writing skills. I love this program and wish it can continue so that more people can benefit from it.

I have been with the program for more than two years. I really appreciate the time and effort that my tutor and other instructors put into helping me improve my English. I also appreciate the program providing us books, newspapers and other study materials. I feel that this is a very good program that can help a lot of people who want to learn English. I hope this program can be continued and expanded.
It is gratifying to see how many lives are changed through the efforts of PAL. The dedicated volunteers and the motivated adult learners work together to improve reading, writing and communication so that, in the end, the whole community benefits by having more active participation.
My life has been enriched by involvement with this organization.
The team at PAL works tirelessly to help adult members of the community to develop the essential reading and writing skills needed to navigate and succeed in their daily lives. Via one-on-one tutoring and group classes, the team provides options for learners to continue to enhance their skills (and confidence) over time.

I’ve been involved with PAL for three years and it is a truly wonderful organization. PAL helps the Newport Beach/Costa Mesa community by matching adult learners with volunteers who help them with their reading, writing and communication skills via one-on-one tutoring and group classes. The programs are thoughtfully
curated by a dedicated literacy team who always keep the learners’ dignity and needs in mind. As an advisory board member, I get to hear about the experiences of both learners and tutors. They are always so inspiring!
I tutor English one-on-one. It is very fulfilling to see my learner as she makes progress toward her goals.
I volunteer as a tutor for this organization and find it very inspirational and conscientiously run. I have also attended a fund-raising event that featured a local author and had a good turnout.
When I moved to Newport Beach after retirement I knew no one and really wanted to make good use of my time. Fortunately for me I found PAL ( Project Adult Literacy) through a conversation I had with a tutor I met.
PAL has provided me with a community of interesting, dedicated individuals through their program of training and ongoing development.
Additionally I have been made aware over and over by the learner I tutor how important our time together has been to her and how much it matters to her well-being.
I was well matched by the program director with a committed woman from Tehran who works full time and was seeking to better her work position.
Due to her hard work and our collaborative relationship she has grown immensely in confidence and literary skills.
For me, the gratification from this tutor/learner experience is more than I ever expected.
PAL out of the Newport Beach Library is a flawlessly executed program and this competence from those in charge make the tutor role seemless and very rewarding.
Project Adult Literacy provides this retired teacher an amazing chance to keep giving back and to keep learning. Tutoring these diverse and exciting adults is a growing and enriching experience. I feel so fortunate to have found this opportunity as a volunteer and will keep opening my mind and my heart as I watch the learners move forward with new confidence.
I am very proud to be a tutor in the Project Adult Literacy Program at the Newport Beach Public Library. The program has helped so many adults learn to read, write and speak English. The program offers individual tutors for adults and several classes to improve English skills. I love watching the improvement and see the confidence this program brings to each learner.

Project Adult Literacy at the Newport Beach Public Library provides tutors and classes to help adult learners improve their English reading, writing and speaking skills in order to accomplish every day things they struggle with.
I love being a part of this wonderful program.
Every important social issue is impacted for adults with low literacy. Improved literacy skills can empower individuals to lift themselves out of poverty, find and keep sustainable employment, and ultimately change their lives and the lives of their children (reading skills of parents are a significant factor in the future academic success of their children!). Services provided by PAL to promote and enhance Adult literacy in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa are critical to our individual, family, and community well-being, as well as a crucial success factor to promote economic development. 5 Stars!!
I am honored to be a tutor with the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy program. Project Adult Literacy staff provides tutors with ample support and guidance to help our learners excel. I've been engaged with two learners in my two years with the organization, both of which have been appreciative of the Program's availability and successful in working toward their goals.
From everyday literacy objectives to long-term career or educational goals, the Program offers materials and suggestions to help. Immersion into the English language and American dialect is easier with consistent 1:1 tutor/learner sessions and a spectrum of resources online and in hardcopy at the Newport Beach Public Library.
This Program positively impacts the learner's experiences, confidence and literacy success. As a tutor, the most rewarding aspect is to have supported the learner's literacy foundation and see their engagement and excitement grow as work toward milestones together.
I love serving on the board for PAL - it's a close-knit group of engaged individuals united in a common goal of increasing literacy within our community. Literacy is an issue that doesn't normally receive a lot of attention, particularly for adults. However, literacy impacts not just our learners, but their families and communities. Our dedicated volunteers have helped hundreds of people (both ESL and native speakers) to improve their literacy skills and thus enable further empowerment.
PAL is a wonderful organization dedicated to serving an often forgotten part of our community. All the tutors and volunteers provide such an incredible service.
I am a English Learner, I've been studying English here more than 5 years. This is wonderful place to help English Learner like me, and I am moving forward little by little. There are wonderful coordinator and many dedicated tutors and organized programs. Through this program, I acquired citizenship and received counselling to admit the college. All the honorable volunteers and challenging learners who have same goals make me touched here. I am lucky to know this programs and to meet them.

I am a English learner. I've been taking the programs for many years. There are many wonderful variety programs for learner. The volunteer teachers of the programs and the tutors of one on one class have high teaching skills and really responsibility and dedicate to their work. The coordinators in the library office are very good supporters for us and encourage to achieve our goals. My English is improving from the programs and I am also learning the cultures. I highly recommend the programs.
I have been volunteering in the Literacy program for more than two years. Friday morning at 9:00 is the highlight of my week. My learner is a woman from Korea. She has been in the U.S. for many years but never found the need to learn English. She was very embarrassed to be around her American friends because she comprehended about 20% of what they said. When she tried to read a book or newspaper she understood almost nothing. It has been my pleasure to work on her reading and listening comprehension and watching her self-confidence dramatically improve.
I feel very fortunate to be able to participate in this program and I am humbled by the fact that they have faith in me.
As a lifelong volunteer, I recognize that my three years as a tutor in the literacy program at the Newport Beach Public Library have been the most rewarding volunteer experience I have had. The mission of this program is to empower individuals who want to improve their lives by growing their reading and writing skills in the English language. In this affluent area of Southern California, there are a surprising number of people suffering from the inability to communicate easily and effectively. The literacy program provides hope and concrete steps for people to achieve their specific goals, be it speaking to their child's teacher, their doctor, their supervisor, or attaining a better job.
What impresses me about the program is the comprehensive support given to the tutors in group meetings and individual conversations. When I don't know how to help my learner I ask for suggestions and am given resources along with ideas . The program is superbly run and each learner is treated with dignity and warmth.
Here is a sketch of the two learners I have work with: First, a young woman here alone from Asia. She had been cheated in a car purchase, had had her phone stolen, and felt very alone. A strong bond formed between us and she is now in graduate school and successfully balancing a job with her studies. She is working in the field she loves. The second learner is a gentleman from Iran who is an anesthesiologist as well as a lawyer. He is not a man I would expect to see in a literacy program. He is committed and eager to improve his English speaking and writing skills.
Working with these two learners has enriched my life immensely. Project Adult Literacy is providing great value to the public and providing it in a personal, encouraging and motivating way..
This literacy program is an amazing program for who wants to be a better you. It provided a variety of small groups classes and one-on-one tutors to fit your learning goals. Through the classes, I not only learned from the instructors but also got opportunities to meet with other learners. About the tutors systems, the program paired a tutor for me based on my learning goals and my competencies. Through the program, I gained my confidence and met new friends. It was a relief for me that this amazing and high quality program cost zero. Shut up to Cherall, thank you for continuing to make this program bigger and stronger. I would rate for a hundred stars if it was not limited to five stars.
This is an interesting program that teach me writing, listening, reading and speaking English. These lessons has been important for learn this language, so I hope continuing in this program for a long time. ......Peter

I’m writing to share a bit of my personal story and experience at the Literacy Program of the Newport Beach Central Library.
In 2017, I arrived to the US from Venezuela to reunite with my family. Even though I was 62 years old, this was a new beginning for me. My first limitation was that I spoke little English, so I enrolled in some of the Literacy Program classes: News You Can Use, Idioms, Grammar and others of the Newport Beach Central Library.
At the same time i was continuing my studies, so recently i receive my GED Certificate
Today, I would like to thank you to the staff that is helping me in my dream of been a good English speaker. Thank you all for helping me achieve this dream. The staff do a very good job and help me a lot.
Now I want to move on towards the next step in my life. I am enrolling myself in a Public Health Course and in the meantime, i am continuing to improve my English skills by using different resources on the internet.
Once again, thank you so much ! for helping me….. Pedro Linares
This literacy program is amazing for both Learners and Tutors. The staff provides creative, innovative support for the Tutors to improve their teaching skills; including a wide variety of materials, training, and emotional guidance. In turn, the Learners receive one-on-one time with their Tutor with relevant, personal, measurable, and inspiring lessons.

I’ve enjoyed being a tutor with the Newport Beach ProLiteracy program for four years. Cherall Weiss guides us with patience, creativity, and encouragement. She shares a plethora of support, ideas, and unlimited resources. In addition to one-on-one tutoring, the program offers supplemental specialty classes.
Although I was not trained as an Educator, through tutoring, I am teaching wonderful people to read, write, and converse in English. It is rewarding to watch my Learners’ metamorphosis of confidence and connection to the community. Both Tutors and Learners benefit: sharing our diversity of customs, traditions, and friendships.
My first Learner was a gentleman from Iran who has become a U.S. citizen and “graduated” from the ProLiteracy program. I currently have two female Learners, one from Japan and the other from Iran. I am so proud of all of them and admire their dedication to learning English.
Through my Learner’s struggles, they remind me of how difficult the English language is with its inconsistencies, idioms, cultural/media references, changes through generations, etcetera. I am constantly learning, too!
From the staff to the teachers to the learners, everyone works hard in this organization. These volunteers are truly making a difference in their community.
PAL is a gift for those seeking help with their English literacy AND for those who enjoy teaching. Both the learning and tutoring components of PAL enhance our community. The results-driven tutoring (focused on the learner's expressed practical needs) produces tangible, life-changing impacts for our learners. Likewise, the tutoring experience is an extremely meaningful volunteer opportunity with immeasurable happiness dividends. I strongly recommend learning more about PAL and how you can help!

Newport Mesa Proliteracy does amazing hands-on work, directly changing the lives of both learners and tutors. This organization supports the adult reading-challenged community in a supportive, patient and dignified environment, enabling learners to profoundly change the quality of their lives. The organization has a lean operating budget and relies heavily on volunteer support, so its funds go directly to enriching the lives of its learners. Imagine knowing you were part of an organization that helped a parent learn to read stories to their children, enabled a person to confidently apply for a better job, or prepared an individual to interact with neighbors and co-workers in English to develop new connections with their community. Newport Mesa Proliteracy engages in high quality, high touch work to improve people's lives.
PAL has been serving the adult literacy needs of Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, and surrounding communities for over 20 years. As a long term volunteer I continue to be impressed by the goals our adult learners have achieved and by the dedication of our volunteers, tutors, board members, and committee participants. The staff is wise, dedicated, and enthusiastic about our mission. Several of my friends now serve as volunteer tutors and they tell me how much they value from their experience and how much they have learned from their adult learners. As our learners reach their goals, they also increase their confidence in their language skills, allowing them to participate more fully in our community.

Newport Mesa Proliteracy touches people's lives in the Newport Beach and Costa Mesa communities every day, offering adult literacy services and on-line GED tutoring. In the 15 years I have been involved as a volunteer with the program, I have seen our learners proud smiles as they reach personal milestones -- GED or higher degrees, new jobs, drivers' licenses, or earning US citizenship. My personal skills and appreciation of the diversity of our community have also grown with my involvement.
I enrolled for this program about two and a half years ago as a learner. At first, I felt lonely and separated from the community and people around me but step by step I found myself more involved, more active, and more confident. It happened with the help of selfless people who worked tirelessly, with dedication and obligation to prepare an encouraging ambiance for learners like me. They are wonderful volunteer tutors, instructors, and professional staff. My fantastic tutor helped me improve my English skills by studying weekly in one-on-one 3 hour classes. It wasn’t only my English that improved but also my social skills. I learned about the culture and the people around me. I learned about society and enjoyed the strong friendship I developed with her. I also learned a lot by attending other classes like News, life skills, Idioms, public conversation, and Film. The professional fabulous instructors worked hard to help us find our way in a new chapter of our life. There are plenty of resources for studying in the office and fantastic staff that are always ready for support and help. I love this program and the people who are involved in this wonderful unrivaled program. Thank you for all the splendid things you have done for me and other learners.
I love being a tutor for the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy program. I have had the privilege of working with several learners over the last seven years. The students are hard-working, enthusiastic, and dedicated to advancing. Each week the time spent with the learner flies by. We have such a good time. Even doing the lesson by FaceTime has not lessened the joy it brings. The program is expertly run by Cherall Weiss. She is always ready and willing to help out with any need. I always gain so many wonderful ideas each time there is a Tutor Connect meeting. What joy this program brings to my life!
I have been studying in the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy program dor the last 2 years. In this way, I improved my English a lot. My tutor Judy helped me as a volunteer to improve my English Skills. This program made me safer in this country where I just moved. It brought me into life.
I cannot thank enough those who prepared and managed this program.
I feel very lucky!
Best Regards,

I have been a tutor in the Newport Mesa Proliteracy program for more than three years. The program is extremely well run; excellent resources and coaching are easy to access. The bonus is the relationship that built between myself and my learner; it is a joy to be a part of an eager student's learning! This is an excellent program!
I began as a tutor this year and my experience has been very positive. The program is extremely well run, providing good training and on-going support. I had no prior experience as a literacy tutor, but the training and resources make me feel capable. My learner and I are a very good match. We meet weekly and are having a lot of fun while moving through our materials. I would highly recommend this program.
Would like to give a big shout out for the language program by Newport Beach Public library. They offer a full spectrum of classes to help an individual to thrive not personally but also professionally.
The COVID-19 had made the classes virtual, which allowed me to be enrolled in two-class a week.
I really love Marcia D.'s Tue life skills class where not just vocabularies are very thoughtfully hand-picked by the Marcia but also in-class instruction and students' participation is very effective for learners to learn. We've had sessions for First Aid, Medical Related, Sports, Small talks, even workplace vocabularies. Which definitely helped me to feel more confident to speak with others.
I also want to give a big shoutout to Helene C.'s news class, where she picks very good articles from local newspapers for the class and we will read it thought comprehensively during the class, and questions are always welcomed, Helene will always give us a good answer. Homework is also a very effective learning process for us, as Helene always stressed participation is very important for this class.
Other than the instructors, Cherall and Sarah have always been ready to help, you will always feel their friendliness and warmth.
My plan is to keep enrolling in these two class as I can see there are so much to learn from these amazing teachers and classmates as well.

This program has helped me in many ways with my English and to enhance my reading skills. I am very thankful for my tutor and I enjoy reading books on a day to day basis. Coming from a third world country and not knowing any English made it very hard, but I was able to teach myself and with this program they did not give up on me and saw the effort that was put in. This program not only helped me with my English but because of this program I was able to make a speech at a special event to share my story.
I have been a volunteer Tutor with the Newport Mesa Proliteracy for five years. It has enhanced my life in ways I could not have imagined. I have worked with several learners, and two have become U.S. Citizens. The program is very well run and provides a lot of support for both tutors and learners. There is a constant exchange of ideas and tips amongst the tutors in our quarterly Tutor Connections, and Cherall Weiss, the Literacy Coordinator, always makes our get-togethers informative and fun. Even if you have not been trained as an educator/teacher, I would highly recommend this program. It will enrich your life. There is no greater service to your community than giving the gift of literacy.

For those of us who can read and write, we cannot imagine how isolating it is to perform the simplest of daily tasks without those skills. I have been a volunteer with the Newport/Mesa Proliteracy Program since October 2014. It has, by far, been the most fulfilling experience of my adult life. Watching the pride of a parent able, for the first time, to read a teacher’s note about their child, or seeing the satisfaction of an adult who has read their first book, or witnessing someone who has prepared diligently for the U.S. Citizenship test, and then have the honor of attending their U.S. Citizenship Oath ceremony are beautiful, worthwhile and gratifying moments. The gift of literacy is priceless.

I began with Mesa this summer in their marvelous training program, meeting wonderful fellow tutors from California. I am from a different state in the US, and they welcomed me on board. The director gave us ample evidence-based ideas, direction, examples, and instruction in how to embark on our journey, and left the what to us. Her feedback was clear and simple and engaging. The assistant director gave us the necessary paperwork and also extremely positive feedback.
I have grown with them during my eight weeks of tutoring, approximately. They care immeasurably, and remind us of what is essential. The director shared some new ideas with me about 3-4 weeks ago over Zoom! I have put them into practice. They are fun and time-worthy. This is helping with regular teaching as well as my mojo/chi!
I look forward to more work together in tandem with Newport/MESA, helping the world in modest ways.
Thank you all!

I'm thrilled to be a volunteer in the Literacy Program. Experiencing isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic is a salutary reminder of how our learners feel when unable to communicate easily in English. It's so rewarding to see a learner grow in confidence and language ability as we guide them in their sessions. In fact, I think literacy teaching is a two way street with both learner and tutor benefitting in equal measure. The program is incredibly well run by our program director, Cherall Weiss, a consummate professional who brings so much good experience to this program . I have benefitted so much from her advice and from the assistance of the literacy staff at NBPL.

As a literacy tutor I've seen what confidence refining one's English skills has on my learner's life. As a member of the community I've had the opportunity to recommend that a Turkish mom should consider the free literacy classes available to her at the Newport Beach public library. Presently this mother is struggling with understanding requirements at her son's elementary school and having to speak to the school nurse.
Decades ago, I left graduate school convinced that I could not teach. Newport-Mesa Proliteracy showed me that I could still make a difference. I could use my teaching skills to help people become literate, and change their lives in the process. The program matched me with a very hard case indeed: a man in his sixties who had been illiterate all his life. We started with the alphabet. I have had amazing support from Cherall Weiss, the program coordinator, who has helped me find working strategies to help this man. She has my back, whatever the situation. Unless disaster strikes, I plan to work with NMPL for the rest of my life.
This program provides highly valuable tutoring for adults in the NB area. As a tutor, I have seen numerous adults make huge steps in life through the improvement of their English skills. The coordinators of the program are extremely organized and provide tremendous support to those who want to improve English. Such a value!!!
Now finishing my third year of tutoring with this exceptional organization, I am working with my second adult learner. It is wonderfully challenging to work with different learners from diverse backgrounds to find just the right plan to help them meet their goals. The weekly time commitment is manageable and the results are very rewarding.

What an amazing experience to participate in the ProLiteracy Program at the library! It has been so rewarding to help an adult learner improve their English skills and see the world open up for them. As a tutor you get so much more than you give!!!
What a wonderful organization that helps improve the literacy of both English as a second learner and native speakers. The goal is to help people function better in their community. Both the people who work for Newport Proliteracy and the fellow volunteers that I've met are dedicated and warm people. I can see the improvement in my student week after week. It is an amazing opportunity as an volunteer.
I'm new to the program as an instructor. We are challenged to Covid but the Newport Pro Literacy staff has done a fine job of training online and assisting with any questions I've had. I have an excellent learner and we are making progress. I expect that both of us will have an excellent experience as we work in concert with the Newport Pro Literacy group.
I encourage others to volunteer for the program.
Sincerely,

I recommend this program for who wants to study English for better life in US with Friendly and nice people. This is not only English thing. They encouraged me a lot and I can make a goal. How do I know I am getting better? I am writing this review.I couldn’t imagine like this “performance “(to me) before.
The Newport Mesa ProLiteracy has been an amazing experience. As a volunteer, I am faced with ongoing challenges on how to prioritize and teach effectively. It has been very fulfilling seeing my learner advance and reach the milestones she had set for herself. Without the dedication, support and resources at this organization, these individuals would have no hope of reaching their potential. This program truly bridges the gap to make productive people who can positively benefit our communities. It also is a platform for creating healthy interaction among people who would otherwise not likely meet. The program fosters a sense of empathy and care which is the building block of a healthy environment.

I’ve been a volunteer at the NP Beach literacy program for more than a year. It’s been a truly rewarding experience for both my learner and I. Even though we come from very different backgrounds and our communication is limited, we have developed an endearing relationship of trust and appreciation. Having been exposed to the program, I’ve gained a deeper insight into the difficulties a learner faces. To realize that I’m helping navigate and guide my learner through the unfamiliar world and help ease her life, is a fulfilling experience.
The program provides great training, support and guidance to it’s volunteers with clear goals set for success of every learner enrolled in the program. There are clear objectives for achieving certain milestones in the year’s course with much freedom given to volunteers to create lesson plans and provide appropriate material for their respective learner. Thanks for supporting this non profit program and providing the means to create a marked difference in people’s lives.

i've attended some of the public programs featuring the group's learners and was impressed and touched by their commitment and accomplishment. The tutors and their learners seem to bond in pursuit of the literacy that opens up a world of possibilities. Well organized, creative, and big-hearted, this group deserves the financial support to continue doing their important work.
I was technically a "Tutor" of a fantastic "Learner" during 2018-2019 for NEWPORT/MESA PROLITERACY. But it was NEWPORT/MESA PROLITERACY ("NMPL") that was-in actuality-my "Tutor". NMPL taught me how to teach. Taught me how to communicate. Provided me with amazing ideas/tips. Gave me instructive/constructive feedback on how to do it better. In the end, the Learner (i) landed a new job as an electrical engineer, (ii) obtained Green Cards for himself and his family, (iii) took roadtrips to Arizona and Wisconsin with his family, (iv) passed his California driver's license exam, (v) participated in Writer-to-Writer competition, (vi) shopped with me in Newport Beach (he expertly transacted the purchases), and (vii) we read the Bible and several books. Without NMPL's guidance, the Learner and I would have been challenged for the entire year. YEH NMPL!! You guys rock!!
It is inspiring to observe a person become more confident and successful by improving his or her literacy skills. This opens many doors that were previously closed -- applying for a better job, reading to one's children, communicating with teachers, and many others. This is the role that Newport Mesa Proliteracy plays in our community. Volunteers work with learners one-on-one, helping each at his or her own pace improve literacy skills and become more successful members of our community. As a volunteer tutor, I am proud to play a small part in this work and recommend it strongly to others: both those who can benefit as learners and those who seek a meaningful experience as a tutor.
I’m originally from Korea and had been tutored by a volunteer at the Newport Mesa Proliteracy program. I was a full-time mom and I couldn’t speak English very well. I felt like a little hamster running on the same wheel everyday. I wanted to learn English. Improving my literacy in English has resulted in a lot of new friends and has been greatly helpful to me in obtaining my nursing license. The skills I gained from this program were a significant part of why I was also able to volunteer at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. I really appreciate the Newport Mesa Proliteracy program and I still enjoy attending this program.
This is the most wonderful and helpful program that I have ever taken.
The staff and volunteers are devoted and always willing to help language learners.
They've showed me how I can be a part of community in many different ways such as tutoring sessions, various classes, and introducing outside activities.
I would have been a frog in the well if there had not been this organization.
I want call them PFO
Professional, friendly and organized
They help me learn English
with their organized programs
I really appreciate them
Newport Mesa Proliteracy has a great program with amazing volunteers. Its mission is to empower adults through literacy and strengthen local communities. The decades-old program has utilized one-on-one tutoring, small group classes and workshops to help adult learners in the Newport/Costa Mesa area. The program has a long history of making profound impacts in people who would have otherwise struggled to develop adequate speaking, reading and writing skills.
This organization conducts tutoring at no cost to Adult Learners. We provide the service by volunteers who meet weekly with adults that want to learn to read, write and speak in English. They want to become productive citizens of their communities. Many want to be able to work with their children on homework. Some need the skills to find work, get a driver's license, possible US citizens and most importantly to become an active and giving part of their communities. It is truly an amazing job this nonprofit provides to learners in Orange County, CA.
Thank you Newport/Mesa Proliteracy for doing this amazing job. I am honored to be a part of the literacy program for last five years and serving on the board! I am truly amazed by our volunteers hard work, their dedication, their time and commitment for our program!
Thank you all who are making difference in the community!
I'm the learner who started her way from the mediocre skills and a bunch of problems with self-identification to the better, smarter life. The classes provided by the literacy program make me doubt my skills and overcome my doubt by constant learning and interacting with the native speakers - our tutors - and the learners who are aware of their share of the big secret of life, culture, understanding, and peace. Being a part of this program brings me to the other, better world where we mend our sometimes challenging to accept differences with the gaining of wisdom and mutual support. I love to develop people around me, I appreciate the chance to do it much more than the possibilities to shop on Amazon, to buy a new car or whatever is thought the best traits of the U.S. Wherever I'll be in the future I will apply the role model I learned here, in the Newport Beach Public Library: learn and teach, be a conscious human.
Hi
My name is Belle and I am so blessed to be a part of such a wonderful program. I love working with my learner and learn something new each time. We are very much alike, which I have to hand it to Cherall Weiss to know so much about how to place the tutor volunteer with the learner. And all the help I can get. So many helpful people as close as a phone call.
Thank you
I am grateful to be able to be a part to such a worthy community enrichment program. Which I love every minute of it.
Thanks again
Belle Borsi
When I moved in Irvine I searched for a quiet and nearby library,I was going to Martin Luther king library in San Jose, after a lot of research I found public new port beach library,it is wonderful place. In library I saw an advertise study plan, a volunteer teacher help to student to learn English and find their goal plan, it was awesome and very helpful for me. I can practice English and work to get my plan now , this is very good and useful plan for me. I’m very grateful to Mrs Cherall let me register in this plan and my volunteer teacher Mr Johan.
The Newport Beach Literacy Program provides untold benefits to learners and tutors alike. The resources available at the Newport Beach Public Library to both groups is invaluable. Both the director and her assistant are incredibly helpful. The director brings her wide-ranging experience to the program, providing insights into our tutor - learner relationships as well as instantly being able to provide the right resource for any teaching challenges I face .
Over the years I have found that the value of the literacy program is very far-reaching. In our introduction to literacy we learned that incarcerated individuals have a high rate of illiteracy. I was gratified to learn recently that one of my former learners wants to help those incarcerated folk when she retires by virtue of the fact that she herself benefited so greatly from the literacy program.
The driving force at the Newport Beach Public Library Literacy Program is our director, Cherall Weiss. I am a tutor, and teaching my learner is such an honor and pleasure. I am grateful to be included in this fabulous program. We have mentors to start our journey with our tutors. The speakers and programs which we attend called Tutor Connection are our lifeline. The rich library of books and teaching aids are invaluable. The learners have an incredible number of other weekly classes to explore, and gain more experience with English. Cherall’s absolute most distinguished talent is matching the learners to the tutors. Our program is fluid, dynamic, challenging and extremely rewarding to me, and I am sure to all the learners and tutors.
Participating in the Newport Mesa Proliteracy Program is a two-way street. For the learner the street leads to opportunities for achieving goals in personal, family and community living. The program is organized to help set goals and to encourage the learner to meet them. These goals, both large and small, are met by gaining improved skills in reading, writing and understanding. As the goals are met and new goals set, the learner feels a sense of pride and is inspired to keep going.
For the tutor participating in the program (the street) leads to feelings of satisfaction in seeing the learner progress and in doing something that helps others. The resources of the program to assist the tutor and learner are abundant and can be targeted to the needs of the individual.
We are indeed fortunate to have Newport Mesa Proliteracy in our community.
So proud of the impact this organization has on its pupils! The classes, tutoring, and online GED program truly improve lives!
Volunteering in the NewportMesa Literacy Program has been one of the most rewarding experiences that I have had. It opened my eyes to the great need to provide literacy to the many adults who have fallen through the cracks. One does not think of our community of having this need. I was amazed to learn that there are many adults struggling with literacy problems.
I have met many wonderful individuals and am proud to call them friends.

This program provides valuable service to people who are working hard to improve their English skills -- for education and employment opportunities, to help their children or just to manage life in a new country better. The staff are very welcoming to new learners and volunteers and offer a good range of services to help learners improve.
The Newport Beach Library ProLiteracy program provides a wonderful and rewarding opportunity to give the gift of reading and writing to adults. The staff is most helpful and the resources are great. I would highly recommend the program to non-native speakers and volunteers of all ages.
What a marvelous opportunity for learner and tutor alike! Cheryl Weiss oversees a program whose impact reaches FAR beyond its small office within the Newport Beach Library. Each week hundreds of us work with our students in 2 hour increments to achieve the goals that our adult learners have identified as their priorities. This is individualized learner at its finest! Each dyad is an unique as the members working together. If a tutor is at a loss for ideas or resources, a call or email to the office will resolve the problem. The quarterly "tutor connection" is another way that the tutors can connect with other tutors, be inspired by their successes, and learn about additional techniques to make their sessions more effective. The yearly International Literacy luncheon, also held at the library, is a joy. I left last year's gathering buoyed by the energy, commitment and dedication of about one hundred tutors and learners representing at least a dozen different nations. As I chatted with learners I discovered that there were as many differences in personal goals as there were learners! What was so exciting was hearing how many of those were being achieved. Amazing what a volunteer program can accomplish when leadership and guidance are ongoing and one feels part of a community!
I love Newport Beach library! Great place and great people! I am currently a student in a Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy program at NBPL. As a new immigrant I thank all the staff and volunteers for giving me a great opportunity to learn English. They offer all kinds of different classes and books in this program, such as reading, conversation vocabulary and writing classes etc. They also assign an individual tutor for each student. Also everything is free. I deeply appreciate their effort and time devoted.
Every life has a period of time that has a great impact on it in a distinguishable way. Literacy Program changed my life as an immigrant and gave me a brighter resolution of life. Being with people who help others selflessly is a life changer opportunity for me. All they want is to help others to achieve their personal goals.
I am grateful and honored to be a volunteer tutor and writing facilitator for the Newport / Mesa ProLiteracy Program of The Newport Beach Library. The invaluable experience I have gained seeing our Learners go from beginners to advanced stages in English Language Development is gratifying and beyond words. I give much of the credit to our Director, Cherall Weiss and staff for developing a program designed to encourage and provide each Learner with the necessary tools to achieve their goals. Volunteer Staff Developments are frequently scheduled and are attended by many of us. We share and get helpful information on ways to improve our teaching techniques. Happy, dedicated and committed, this is what I see on the faces of our Learners, staff and fellow volunteers. I hope to be a part of this inspiring program for many years to come.
Sincerely,
Maria Sylvia D. Chronister, MA Ed TESOL

Awesome organization! I signed up for volunteer work here and was impressed with the professional yet friendly approach.
I STARTED BLIND, KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THE PROGRAM EXCEPT IT SEEMED TO PROMISE MORE FLEXIBILITY THAN OTHERS I RESEARCHED. A GOOD ORIENTATION PROGRAM REINFORCED THIS, AND THE EASE OF CONNECTING WITH THE DIRECTOR MADE A GOOD FIT. I HAD THE GREAT GOOD FORTUNE IN TWO WONDERFUL STUDENTS, ONE AN ITALIAN ARCHITECT, WHO BY VIRTUE OF HIS PRACTICE BEING IN THE PROVINCES, NEVER HAD TO SPEAK ENGLISH,AND SECOND, A KOREAN MOM WITH AMBITION TO WRITE CRITICISM OF FILM IN ENGLISH. I SCULPTED A PROGRAM FOR EACH BASED ON THEIR INTERESTS, INTERESTS I FORTUNATELY SHARED. THE DIRECTOR APPROVED MY APPROACH AND PROGRESS WAS AND IS BEING MADE. THE DIRECTOR AND HER ASSISTANT HAVE BEEN ALWAYS ACCESSIBLE AND READY TO HELP. IT HAS BECOME A REGULAR PART OF MY LIFE AND I CAN NOT IMAGINE NOT DOING IT.
An amazing program that changes people's lives, and makes an enormous socio-economic impact in the community.
They tacking very personal care to each client . Always satisfied . I am tacking tutor classes weekly there and use library books and CD all the time.

They want each one to grow and make us better person and this society better. I love them and I love this country. I will be like them to help other people and make difference!

I've been a volunteer tutor in the Newport Mesa Literacy program for 18 months. Due to the insightful and willing help from the Literacy Program staff I've been able to help my learner in her quest to improve her written, spoken and comprehension skills. The help from Literacy staff has been extraordinary in view of the fact that my learner has little access to any internet technology. Nevertheless, the learner has made progress and is always reminding me how grateful she is for all the learning avenues that she has discovered.
I've been in the program for half a year and I've made big progress on my English! My tutor John has been always patient, encouraging, kind and informative. He explained the origins of lots of slangs that help me remember tremendously, and he explained the nuances of some synonyms so I won't get myself into trouble in my daily work.
I'd recommend this program for all levels non-native speakers. My sincere thanks for all the volunteers for making the miracle happen!
Dear Friends, I would like to say very big Thank you to all command of Newport Mesa ProLiteracy English classes. Thank you for your great helpful and chance to study English by your high quality programm. For 1,6 years i began to read books, listen radio, understand a lot of American idioms. But the best and very important to me is, that I began to communicate with people.. I have a lot of new friends .I have a good job. My respect to Cherall Weiss. She is very professional manager and psychologist.Actually, she was the person, who helped me to loose my shy to talk .Thank you to my best tutor Elaine Satine for her patience and exastingness. I love our conversation , book reading, idioms ,movie talk classes. My gratitude to our Teachers-volunteers for great job, what they do We are appreciate all of them. With best wishes , Zhanna .
The Newport Mesa Proliteracy program is a joy for both tutors and learners. The support staff is outstanding and does an amazing job to find perfect matches that are enjoyable and enriching for both sides. I know from the learners whom I have worked with that the full range of programs at the library--book clubs and specialized classes--greatly enrich the one on one tutoring project. This program is a gift to the community and to all involved.
I began tutoring at Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy about seven years ago after retirement. It has been a tremendously rewarding experience leading to lasting friendships, cultural exchanges, and some great fun. The program itself is very well-organized with all the training, resources and support any tutor could want. The Literacy Library has books, programs, teaching materials, and learning tools/games for any level of tutor or learner. As a volunteer with NO teaching background, I am comfortable asking the friendly and experienced literacy staff to assist with ideas, suggestions or materials to help my learners reach their goals. Lastly, the program promotes a wonderful level of openness and trust between learner and tutor. In the course of tutoring my learners, I learn much about their lives, culture, language, foods, customs, struggles, dreams and goals. They readily share their own histories and I am always impressed by their strength and courage. This ProLiteracy program is “win-win” for all who choose to become involved.

I have been tutoring with Newport Mesa ProLiteracy for about 5 years and it has been an enriching and satisfying experience. I have learned much from my learners about their countries, cultures, customs and backgrounds. I have made valuable friendships as a result of the special bond that can form between tutor and learner. The staff at NMPL is extremely knowledgeable and available anytime for questions or advice about the tutoring process. There are resources of every kind in the literacy office (books, CDs, learning aids, visual aids, and computer programs, etc.) and the staff happily provides suggestions or guidance whenever I reach a stumbling block. I feel very well supported in this regard, and that helps me and my learner as we continue to move forward. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, this is the place! Attend orientation/training and you will be on your way to a very enjoyable adventure.
More than 30 years I am going to the Newport Beach library for learning English. All staff of This library is so kind and treat me as a family member.
Their behavior with learner are with compassion and sincerity.
I like to say a special thanks to Sharol, literature department manager, for providing varied programs based on our learner's needs.
The Newport Mesa Literacy program has offered me the opportunity to use the skills that I developed over 35 years as a secondary language teacher.. When I retired 8 years ago from the classroom I was searching for a non- profit organization that would find my participation useful. It was a perfect fit for me. Being able to help people function better in society because of improved English language skills has been so rewarding for me as well as for my learner. Watching my learner's skills and confidence improve the last year and one-half has been exciting!
I've been learning English at Newport Beach library. Staffs and volunteers are so kind! I''m taking some classes and tutoring for English Lerner, these are very helpful! Thanks to them, I can enjoy learning English. I really appreciate them!
I'm so thankful that the Newport Literacy Programm exist. I enrolled for this programm one year ago. Shy, timid and without any self confidence I began my journey. I went to different, wonderful classes and took time with my excellent tutor to reach my goal. One year later I can say that I'm back in life again. I reached the goal i was setting for myself. I met new friends and I gained my self confidence back. This programm is so unique. and lives with the personality of each single volunteer. Everyone here works with passion, commitment and joy. I highly recommend this fantastic organisation.

I look forward to working with the highly talented and devoted members of the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy Board. I am honored that they have appointed me as their Vice President, and I look forward to assisting all the team in all their endeavors. Having spent 36 years in the book publishing industry its especially gratifying to be able to assist in helping people who have struggled to read and write.
I am a learner in this program. It is a terrific non profit program
. I came to US 6 years ago and was confronting language and cultural barriers when I joined it 3 years ago. I gained not only English proficiency but also self esteem in it. My tutor Dr.Steve is a pedestrician with wisdom and humor, he is also a writer. I improved a lot under his tutoring. The teacher Marcia Drew make me feel what is American's volunteer spirit and being inspirited. I love this program. Hopefully, it would attract the public's attention and grow better in future.
Newport Mesa ProLiteracy is a champion in the community for a cause that bears importance that cannot be overstated. Adult literacy impacts our community, its livelihood overall, the well being of its citizens, and the success of the next generations as well. Newport Mesa ProLiteracy provides a lifeline of customized, personal tutoring to hundreds of adults in the community each year - leading to new jobs, driver's licenses, voters, and even books read to children. Many of the adults impacted by the program turn right around and become devotees themselves to community service - a testament to paying it forward. Newport Beach would not be the great community it is without this program!

In a very big shortcut - the Newport Beach Library is like a treasure island where each can find something for himself. The Literacy Program - shines on a top of it as a diamond!
I deeply appreciate all that I am receiving here.
I love the NBPL Adult Literacy Program. Their tutor training is thorough and efficient, and I learned what I need to know to help adult learners most effectively. The program takes care to match learners and tutors in such a way that the relationship benefits both. I am impressed by the program's comprehensive strategy; they offer book clubs and writing classes to their learners. To see an organization fulfill such a need with such care enlivens my faith in humanity.
I am a student of Newport Mesa Proliteracy and love the program. For me this program is like a window of opportunities. I feel myself confident to read, write, and communicate with others in English. I feel very fortunate to be in this program.
There is no greater satisfaction than seeing a non-reader, who needs reading and writing skills to improve his or her life, improve those skills on a daily basis through dedication and hard work. I've experienced the joy of seeing this happen first hand as a tutor in the Newport Mesa Proliteracy program. I don't know of any organization that does a better job of providing adults with the opportunity to move ahead and I am very proud to have been a part of this organization.
I am a learner at Newport Literacy program. For me, the best way has been attending classes such as movie talk, book club, pronunciation class, and cooking class.
I am not only listening, speaking English but also have a chance to discover American culture. This program provides a practical environment for learners like me. Thanks!
I have been with the program for almost two years. My experience has been wonderful with the staff and the tutors. I believe my writing, reading and communication skills have improved a lot. Now I feel more confident talking in front of several people because my pronunciation has improved too.
I have been in the program as a learner more than one year. I really appreciate their efforts. This program has been so useful and helpful in my progress.
I have been a tutor for about five years. My learners have ranged from people who need to improve their English to help their children with school work and learn to live in a new country to learners that were practicing Doctors in their countries who need better Enlish to become licensed here. It is the various need the program serves that make it outstanding for tutors and learners alike. This is a unique program in many ways.

I have been in this program as a learner for few months and this program really helps me a lot. All the staffs are really nice and tutors are so dedicated. I appreciate their efforts.
I have been a tutor at the literacy program for 4-5 years and it has been a most rewarding program for the learners and tutors a like. I have experienced different cultures and the enthusiasm of the learners is contagious. Some have become citizens of the US as a result of the program, and many learners have become more proficient in communication with their children's teachers and doctors. Others have been able to improve at their employment. Valuable and individual growth is amazing,Hy Algazi. Ph.D.
I am a learner at Newport Mesa Proliteracy. The program is really well done. You can choose from a lot of different workshops (cooking, pronunciation, grammar, writing, art craft, movie.....) and have a tutor for private lessons. All the teacher volunteers are very nice. Learning English can be easy and fun.
I have participated in the literacy program of Newport Beach library as an English learner for 1.5 years. The program is great and very supportive to strengthen my weak English. Now I have high confidence to speak with my customers and other people everywhere.
i really appreciate Newport/Mesa Proliteracy.
I have been a volunteer in this program for three years and am very impressed by other volunteers, the support of the director, and the general enthusiasm among students and tutors.
I researched programs when I became interested in volunteering and this one caught my fancy because of the quality of the training and the communication skills of the director. I am very happy with my choice and my students have been happy with their progress.
I have been a tutor and assessor for this program for three years. I am so impressed by the dedication from the staff, learners and tutors. I am so proud to be part of a city that provides such an incredible program.
I have volunteered with Newport ProLiteracy, which offers tutoring and classes for English learners, for 4 years. The volunteers I have met are kind, lively people who want to help learners improve their skills in English. The learners come from all over the world and are dedicated to becoming active participants in their community while developing better communication skills. I am grateful to have learned much about cultures of the world from the individuals I have taught. The director and staff of the ProLiteracy group are engaged in doing what is best for the program and the people it affects. This is a great nonprofit group!
I have been a tutor for almost 2 years and I have helped 2 young ladies from other countries with their ambitions to improve their English skills. They are hard workers and very appreciative of all we do for them. It's been a very rewarding experience and I am proud of our city to provide such an excellent program.
This is a well run, results-oriented program. It offers a valuable service in helping learners develop a skill that is as basic as it is essential.
I have been involved with Newport Mesa Pro Literacy Program for two years as a tutor with two learners as well as chairing and participating in their annual fund-raising luncheon.
I have had the privilege of working with the most dedicated people ever - both those couple on the payroll (underpaid) and the many tutors, teachers and learners we are constantly in touch with. This Organization has changed the lives of many hundreds of people who could not get jobs, could not become citizens, could not help their children learn and could not communicate with others. They have given a life to those who thought they "couldn't"!
I have been a volunteer at the Newport Mesa Proliteracy at the Newport Beach Library for a couple of years now. It is a fantastic program. All involved love what they do and it shows.
For five years, I have been a tutor in this outstanding program. After a 36-year career in advertising, and totally taking literacy for granted, I discovered in my retirement the profound impact this program has on lives. For the learners, who are so incredibly motivated and so appreciative to learn and assimilate into our culture and society, many with the goal to give back....to the tutors who are so humbled seeing the results of our efforts. Parents participate more in their kids' schools, get better jobs, take higher ed classes, get drivers licenses and some even reach the level of professionalism they left behind in their native countries. Amazingly, each of my learners have told me "volunteerism" isn't something they ever experienced before and believe it is a wonderful American anomaly. In addition, the one-on-one tutoring is the merely the tip of the iceberg re: all the classes and on-going activities the program offers. I am proud to be a very small part of this wonderful and vital anomaly.
I have been a tutor in the Literacy Program for about 8 years. I have had students from China, Japan, Iran and Syria. They were all highly committed to improve their English skills. The program gives the opportunity for one to one learning with a native speaker. Most adult learners flourish in that enviornment. The Literacy Staff is always there for any necessary backup. The experience for me has been very rewarding. As one famous teacher said,"By our students, we are frequently taught."
I have had three different female learners over the course of the past six years. It has been such a pleasure to work with these eager women as they strive to be able to better Understand and further their skills in reading English.
They are so grateful for the time that each of the tutors spends with them and it's a wonderful, wonderful one on one program. I have been really enriched by taking the time out to work with these people.
I have have been a tutor twice for one year each and I think the program is excellent. I have had lots of help from the office and the materials available are very complete and useful. My learners have both thrived under the program. One has been able to hold a steady job based on her improved English skills, both reading and writing. The other returned to Japan with a much better grasp of English and has enrolled her children in an English language program there.
I'm a learner at the New port Beach Library litericy program.
Thia program is amazing for me.
I got a lot help from here and everybody are very kind.
I really like to participate in this program .
This program for literacy is so positive. Filled with excellent training for the tutors and tremendous resources for learning. I have been so impressed with the dedication and effort put into helping the learners. As s tutor it feels so rewarding to see these motivated learners become more proficient with their reading.
I am taking the tutor class and other programs at Newport Mesa Proliteracy .
All of them are helpful and useful. I have improved my English skills and learned
the American culture there. They contribute great benefit for newcomers and learners.
I am a volunteer tutor at the Newport Beach library literacy program.. I was in their training class, which was excellent, and am enjoying working with my student, an educated woman from Korea who wants to learn better English so she can teach kindergarten here in California, as she did in Korea.
Each student is evaluated so she or he can receive the most appropriate tutoring. The literacy coordinator is there to answer questions and give advice and her office has many good books arranged by topic and reading level which tutors can use. There is also information there on various courses for literacy students. She monitors tutors' abilities by having us record one or more sessions and then giving feedback.
The program is amazing.
All the teachers volunteers are so nice and kind.
You can choose from to many different programs and really learn English!
I am a learner at Newport Mesa ProLiteracy, their programs are amazing in a very friendly and fun environment. Many newcomers get profits from their programs. This is a great opportunity for me to engage and practice my English .

Education is the fundamental method for social improvement, and this literacy program looks to be successful to help its clients to do better in their lives. I was fortunate to find this program, the program management and coordinators are nice and professional ,My teacher is smart and patient , I felt improvement in my english skiIls and my self esteem even after a short time of using this program.I can not say enough good things about this program. I wish some day I could serve my community like the way those people do.
I have been involved with is this program for several years as a tutor. The enthusiasm of the administrators, tutors and learners is contagious. Newport Mesa Proliteracy program offers both tutors and learners substantial and excellent resources and personal assistance to help ensure success. I worked with a learner for several years, and our shared commitment to make her learning experience successful made a deep impression on both of us. The overall spirit community, of helping, and of enthusiasm by all involved, makes this a program of which I'm proud to be a part.
I am a first time volunteer with the Newport Beach Library literacy program. I am thrilled to be a part of it. I can't wait to use my special education teaching skills to help others in our community learn to read better and to become more active parent volunteers or improve their job skills or do whatever it is that they envision for themselves! Thank you, Newport Beach Library for providing volunteers with the very fulfilling activity!
I have been a tutor since March 2013. My pupil has blossomed over this short time into a much more confident, learned, assertive woman. She now has a greater respect for who she is and what she can accomplish. She and I both agree that the strides she has made are a direct result of being involved in the Proliteracy Program.
In just 1 1/2 years, she can read and write with much more comprehension. Together we have established a warm, positive, mutually-beneficial relationship (it makes me feel so good to travel this path with her) and I look forward to meeting her every week. Tutoring is now a highlight of my life!
I'm a first-time Volunteer Tutor with Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy and am so glad I'm a part of this incredible organization. I was assigned a 40-year old male Learner from Europe. He has 3 Master Degrees and a PhD and I'm assisting him with his English - speaking, reading and writing. I am so proud of his improvement and can see his growing comfort with the English language. Even though he's motivated to learn, I can see that it takes a complete Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy program to allow this growth through the books he listens to, the classes he attends, and this Volunteer Tutor.
I'm new to the area, and new to this program, but it's already proven to be a great way to get involved with my new community - as well as learn a lot!
However, the biggest reason why I love this organization is because it's providing a service that is ESSENTIAL; helping adults to develop high literacy skills in a way that is comfortable and accessible. I think this is such an important part of maintaining a fair and democratic society, and Newport Mesa Proliteracy does a great job!
I have been involved as a tutor for only one year now but I can already see the huge impact that this program makes. At any point in time one can see tutors working with learners in the library's study rooms, cubicles, and even at the cafe. We call our charges learners, not students, because they are actually learning how to become better parents, employees, and community members by not only improving their literacy skills, but also by learning about their community and their new adopted country/culture. The new tutor orientation is fun and thorough and in addition to doing a great job of matching tutors with learners, the Literacy office provides a full calendar of additional workshops for it's learners with pronunciation workshops, grammar/vocabulary, and book club being among the offerings. Newport Mesa Proliteracy is a great program and I'm proud to be involved with it.
I am so proud to be a small part of the Newport/Mesa Literacy Program and see all that it offers for those wanting to learn English and for those wanting to assimilate into our society. The dedication of staff and volunteers is inspiring. For the learners, they have the opportunity to be assigned their own personal tutor; there is a book club, writing class, conversation class, discussion group, movie talk and more. Both tutors and learners gain much.
I have been involved with this program since 2010 and not a day goes by when I hear both learners and tutors talk about how Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy has impacted their lives. Every nook and cranny of the Newport Beach Public Library is filled with tutor/learner pairs working hard each day. I am proud to be associated with such a warm, giving and life-changing organization!
The tutors in this program are in a way goodwill ambassadors to the various countries from which the learners come. The learners are becoming more participatory in their communities and gaining a lot of self confidence through their increased skills in English.
The Newport Mesa Proliteracy program is having a great impact on the community. Each time in the office I experience groups of people learning to have meaning conversations and striving to understand english. I believe this program is bringing some extra happiness to the community and the participants of the program. It is also clear that the Newport Mesa Proliteracy program is thinking outside the box and finding new ways to teach literacy to students.
The amazing enthusiasm shown by Learners in this program is truly inspiring. Adults from all walks of life (I have had a Persian engineer and an Israeli building contractor) are eager to gain reading and writing skills and improve verbal communication. Being a Tutor is a chance to contribute an invaluable service to the community. Bill K.
I have been a volunteer tutor in the Newport Beach Literacy program for more than 5 years. The contributions this group makes to each person's life is amazing. I have seen so many lives enhanced and become more fulfilling. Learners have succeeded in going to college; getting US citizenship; finding a job and getting promoted at a job. As a volunteer I too have learned so many things about others culture, language and traditions.
Newport Mesa ProLiteracy is such a positive experience on all fronts. Both learners and tutors alike gain benefits that are immeasurable. Just to name a few of our programs - the one-on-one tutoring; literacy classes several days and nights a week to assist students; literacy conferences and workshops for learners and tutors; International Literacy Day recognitions and awards to our learners. The NMPL organization serves the community in order to empower individuals to take control of their lives by becoming proficient in English. There is still a wide population to serve; we reach out to all those who are in need.
Newport Mesa ProLiteracy is a program designed to help people who are challenged in English become stronger members of our community. It allows the tutor volunteer plan a program for the learner that is designed to help the learner meet specific goals. Each plan is different, based on what the learner wants to accomplish: read with their children, help out in a classroom, pass the GED, obtain a driver's license, understand the process of voting, etc.
Prospective learners take an orientation class and tutors attend a general training. In this way the learner knows what is expected of them and what they might get, and the tutor is given tools for planning the lessons. It's a wonderful combination.
It is very rewarding on so many levels to be a tutor in the program. It is particularly exciting to celebrate with the learner when they reach their goals.
