Causes: Health, Heart & Circulatory System Diseases & Disorders Research
Mission: To collect and disseminate information regarding heart disease and the tools available to fight that disease in order to reduce the mortality rate.
Programs: The pima research foundation has completed several clinical investigations and is currently conducting studies in a variety of clinical areas. Specialty areas include the management of hypertension, stable and unstable angina, acute myocardial infarction, cardiac arrhythmia, chronic heart failure, electrophysical studies, and percutaneous transluminal intervention. Investigations conducted by the research foundation are directed to these areas of expertise. We are currently enrolling patients in a number of research protocols. These include valiant, which compares the efficacy and safety of long-term treatment with valsartan, captopril, and their combination in high-risk heart failure patients after myocardial infarction. Assent 3 is an open label trial with 3 parallel groups. Patients with acute myocardial infarction, presenting within six hours of the onset of symptoms, will be randomized to either full dose tnk-tpa with heparin sodium, full dose tnk-tpa combined with enoxaparin, or half dose tnk-tpa combined with abciximab and heparin sodium. In addition, the pima research foundation has been invited to join the national institutes of health in participating in oat. The occluded artery trial will test whether opening an occluded infarct artery with percutaneous coronary intervention, including stents, 3 - 28 days after an acute myocardial infarction in patients who are at increased long-term risk will reduce mortality, recurrent nonfatal infarction, and hospitalization for chronic heart failure.
