I went to the Pas. Humane Soc. to just "look" at the dogs available...I wasn't really ready, willing or (thought) able to adopt a dog. Living on a fixed income makes me consider any added expense. Long story short, I fell in love with a special dog. Introduced by a special staff. That dog was the most comforting companion thru thick and thin. . .Good times and bad. Best decision I ever made! Just for "looking". Staff was wonderful, and process fairly easy. Knowing that the staff cared, I sent a picture of "Jane" on a sofa in her forever home. I now wonder why I waited. Thanks to each member of the Pasadena Humane Society! : )
My husband and I adopted our two cats from the Pasadena Humane Society and had a wonderful experience -- from the website pictures and information on animals available for adoption, to the helpful staff, to the coming home advice -- we couldn't have been more pleased. But this is by no means the only contact I've had with Pasadena Humane Society through the years. PHS-SPCA also provides residents in its service areas with wildlife support -- and when you live in the suburbs there is plenty of wildlife to deal with! At different times through the years we've had skunks, opossums and feral cats set up home on our property. The PHS staff gave us helpful information on how to humanely trap the critters and then, once caught, promptly came out to remove and humanely relocate the little trespassers. This is an organization that provides reliable, consistent service and I am happy to support it as I can.
I adopted both of my cats from PHS and I received excellent customer service and consultations on both visits. My adoption counselor gave me and my husband the low-down on the challenges of having a new kitten, taught us why declawing is inhumane, and gave us lots of helpful information for when we took our new kittens home. My cats are now all grown up and are wonderful members of my family. I will always be grateful to PHS, for saving Max & Tom's lives and for helping me find two of the loves of mine. In fact, I had such great experiences as an adopter at PHS, that I jumped at the chance to work in their Development Office. As the Development Associate there for 10 months, I had the opportunity to meet some of the most animal-loving, dedicated and wonderful staff members that I have ever had the good fortune to work with. It is a phenomenal organization to be a part of and I am proud to have been a staff member and to be a donor.
My husband and I went in to adopt a cat a couple of years ago. We hadn't been to a humane society before with adoption counselors and strict regulations. These were the features, however, that led to our adopting the perfect cat for us. Our adoption counselor, Ute, listened to the qualities we were looking for in a cat--some of which were contradictory--and suggested one in particular. We decided to take her advice even though it wasn't a cat we'd been interested in initially and we've been glad ever since. Ute knew the cat's personalities so well that she was able to direct us to the perfect four-legged addition to our family. Her work made me want to volunteer and I began several months later. Now, I volunteer once a week as an adoption counselor, trying to match up families with the perfect pet the way Ute did for us. Since I started volunteering, we've also added an additional kitty to our family. I love hearing what people are looking for and then helping them find the right pet for them. I feel satisfied knowing that the animals are going to good forever-homes. Although some people aren't thrilled about the strict regulations--and tell us so--most appreciate that these rules are in place to protect the animals above all else. I've learned so much about animals and animal behavior and love passing the knowledge along to families who are adopting. The Humane Society inspired me to volunteer, though my hours are nothing compared to some of the volunteers who come several times a week and help out in many different aspects of the organization. Any organization that inspires so much dedication from a variety of volunteers--the program actually fills up there are so many people!--is doing something right, in my opinion. On another note, the conditions for the animals are so good that clients don't feel the need to "rescue every animal" rather than going home with the right animal for them--and that makes a huge difference as well. There's even a new program in place now to teach dogs some basic commands (sit, down, heel). What dedication! The Pasadena Humane Society is a wonderful place; the animals who come through these doors are lucky to be in a caring environment where they will be taken care of until they are matched up with the right family.
My husband and I were looking for a dog and we looked all over. It had been about 2 years since we had to put my golden down and looking at all the animal in all the shelters we went to really took a toll on me. Until we went to the Pasadena Humane Society. We met our dog Riley, a jack russell chiuaua mix. He only had one handler because they said that he had behavior issues. We were able to meet with him in the friend area and he took to us instantly. his handler was amazed and did everything she could to make it possible for us to take him home. Since he had behavior issues they were scared to let us take him, but we took him home and gave him some love and he is a wonderful dog. He is extremely protective which is what i think they noticed was his problem but we just had a baby and he loves him and protects him very well. I now have done the wiggle waggle walk for the past 3 years to help support the PHS and all it does for the animals that don't have home.
