Nonprofit Overview

Mission: Partners In Care Maryland (PIC) is a 50l(c)3 community nonprofit helping older adults remain independent in their own homes and engaged in the community. We operate using an innovative time/service exchange model with values of reciprocity, social capital, and equality infused into the culture of the program. We engage people to use their time and talents to help themselves and each other with the myriad tasks of everyday living. Most people want to stay in the homes and communities they know and love. We help make this possible by providing transportation and handyman services, member care, advocacy, and social programs to support healthy, independent, active living. We are celebrating our 25th Anniversary in Anne Arundel County this year. We always welcome new members and hope you will visit our website, and come to an orientation program to see how you might like to get involved. If you 're looking for something creative and interesting to do, or if you need services, give us a call. Join us. Become part of the PIC family.

Since I no longer drive, the services of Partners in Care have been a blessing by transporting me to doctor's appointments. I have been a client for several years and found their volunteers so cordial and punctual. The office staff are very professional and courteous and always respond to my requests promptly. I am so thankful I discovered this great organization and send my profound thanks to everyone involved.

I joined Partners in Care last year 2023 when I retired. I wanted to volunteer at a place where there were many opporturnities to help those in need. Partners In Care helps the elderly for those who can't drive to their doctors appt. go to the grocery store, or just need someone to talk to and can visit them at their homes. They also have a boutique where donations are given and resold for a lower price to those who can't afford buying things in stores. I work at the boutique as a cashier and also help in the admin office when needed. I have meet so many wonderful people and each time I'm there I feel so fulfilled inside and happy. I feel I am doing something worthy with my life and have meet a few new friends along the way.

I came to Partners in Care when my husband was diagnosed with a neuro-degenerative disease and could know longer drive. I experienced first-hand how this impacts our lives and wanted to volunteer to "pay it forward" for when we might need to reach out for assistance. I am happy to report that my husband is doing well and although I have not been as available as I had hoped, I found in Partners in Care a community that supports the elderly in their efforts to remain independent and feel comforted in knowing that they will be there for us when we need their help. It does our hearts good to serve.

At age 50 I came to Partners In Care as an Americorps volunteer via Volunteer Maryland. After my year of Americorps service I worked on grants and helped transport older adults there until 2018. Years after my Americorps year, while I was still there I had a hip replacement and an amazing group of volunteers helped me when I most needed it. God bless them all.

After leaving a successful career and retiring to the Eastern shore, I immediately knew that I had to get involved in my community. Driving for Partners in Care was the perfect fit for me. Flexible hours and most of all meeting wonderful people that you know really need your help. Volunteering on a one-on-one basis, I'm able to get to know a person that has so many years of life experiences to share with me. It's a win win situation.

I joined Partners in Care as a driver almost 3 years ago when I first moved full-time to the Eastern Shore. Being a volunteer has enabled me to meet interesting people I certainly would not otherwise have had the opportunity to know. I have made ongoing friends with more than one. Additionally it has given me the ability to know my way around much quicker and introduced me to places I otherwise might not have learned about.

Since 2020 I have enjoyed participating in the Partners In Care program. Driving is fun for me and I volunteer to drive people to appointments. The program hooks me up with those requesting rides. I look on their website for open transport requests, choose times and locations convenient for me and sign up for those rides. I have lived here in Easton for 40 years but offering this service has taken me to parts of this area I had never been. I have met so many interesting people. The kindness and appreciation exchanged between us is very rewarding.

As the Site Director of the Mid Shore branch of Partners In Care, Maryland, Inc., I have gotten to know our members in Talbot and Caroline Counties quite well. Every time they call in an appointment request, they make it a point to tell us how much they appreciate what we do for them. I have been learning firsthand that we do more that just provide vital services, we are saving lives. When a member hangs up the telephone saying, "I love you for what you do for me." and "Thank you! I am so grateful for Partners In Care; it if wasn't for you, I don't know what I would do," I know we are making a difference in the lives of our older adults. And, when I learn that, because of the support and encouragement we provide, our members are still engaging in their communities and continuing to give their life meaning, I feel hopeful because older adults all deserve to not merely have to exist their days away.

I've been driving clients for Partners in Care for a number of years, on and off. The drives are rewarding and challenging. The clients have different personalities, needs and capabilities. Sometimes it takes a while to understand the best way to provide the driving service. But the clients are always grateful. Their sincere gratitude is a reward of its own.

I have been a member of the Mid Shore Partners In Care Maryland, Inc. for just under one year, receiving services. Though I am only in my mid-sixties, I experienced a major health event in 2022, which robbed me of my independence. My wife immediately became my caregiver, and searching for a way to help me build upon the independence she and my doctors worked to help me regain, purposefully moved us from another state to connect me with the organization. Though I have regained a significant degree of independence from over the past two years, I am no longer able to work, spending my days isolated at home while my wife works to support us.

The day of my first transport, I could not wait to tell her how great my day had been. I recall saying how excited I was to have gone to see my new doctor. When she asked, “What do you mean?” I simply replied, “I got out of the house and loved talking with the volunteer driver.”

Because of the confidence Partners In Care provides, I am doing things again on my own at home. I enjoy cooking dinner each night. I love interacting with the volunteers and other people I meet as I give back as cashier at Mid Shore’s Pop-Up Boutique Events and working a table at community events throughout Talbot and Caroline Counties. The transportation services I receive prevents financial burden because my wife does not have to miss work to take me to vital appointments; she is able to focus on being the financial support for our family. I appreciate the gaps that Partners In Care provides to us here on the Mid Shore and the independence they have given back to me.

A Heartfelt Thank You,
Mr. D.

I’ve been with Partners In Care since 2013 with the Frederick branch. I love the care and concern they share with us passengers. These are lovely people who care and that work in the office, the boutique, and the volunteer drivers that take me to my doctor’s appointments, laboratory tests, and shopping. I don’t know what I would do without them. They are a Godsend and PIC always need more volunteer drivers. If I was able I would have volunteered with them. PIC is full of very genuine, kind, and loving people. I pray at some point I’ll be able to give back or pay it forward for they are a valuable organization here in Frederick, MD, and Annapolis, MD, where a lot of us shop at and use them for rides and other small miscellaneous tasks. Thank you very much Partners In Care!

When Bill and I retired we wanted to give back. We chose to volunteer with PIC because they had needs that matched our individual talents plus they were willing to let us help around our travel schedule. We’ve enjoyed our experiences working with many seniors and have built up lots of credit hours for any future needs we may have as we age. It is an organization that values all it’s members, those receiving services and those providing them.

Partners In Care have provided me with transportation, maintenance services and referrals to others for additional services. I use a wheelchair to go out; there are no family members nearby to help me. I have been facing multiple medical challenges as well as problems with my house. Partners In Care have been invaluable in providing transportation with a wheelchair lift to get me to on-going medical appointments. Their maintenance staff have come to my house many times to help with household issues. In addition, a gasoline container was bulging in my shed and I couldn't get the local handyman to dispose of it. One of Partners In Care's office managers came to my house and personally removed the hazardous container. When I was having trouble finding local contractors to come to my house for various house issues, Partners In Care's navigator referred me to reputable businesses. I continue to get referrals to local businesses as needed. Partners In Care has exceptional staff who go out of their way to consistently and reliably assist me.

As a volunteer at the Partners In Care Upscale Boutique I most enjoy greeting shoppers, both returning and new. So often they want to express their appreciation for the open layout and beautiful displays in the store. New shoppers are impressed by the quality of the items for sale. Many say they did not know we accept donations, but they certainly will be bringing their no longer needed items to the Boutique. I often hear from return customers that they had just dropped off a donation and now were shopping for something "new to me." Shoppers also tell me they know someone that receives services from Partners In Care and how appreciative they are
It is a fun place to volunteer for Partners In Care and I encourage some of our customers to join our group.

I’m handicapped and in a wheelchair and needed someone to help me out with doing some repair work I needed. A gentleman who volunteers at PIC came and did the job I needed done and couldn’t afford to pay for by hiring a pro. He wouldn’t take the small amount of money I tried to give him as a tip, instead saying donate it to PIC instead. He was very nice and did a good job. I know there’s not enough folks who volunteer compared to the amount of folks who need assistance. It’s people like these who do volunteer that help those of us who are in need. If you can and have a skill you can do I strongly urge you to volunteer. You’ll reap more rewards than the time and energy you give. Grateful in Glen Burnie

Hello to all those whom my be interested in Partners In Care. I am a Senior and I am very
happy to be a member of Partners In Care.
Partners In Care has taught me to continue to learn for example, now I can use my smartphone and send a text message. They also sent me to a class in side of Partners In Care and and provided me with a brand new
updated tablet. They help set it up and now I
have a email address and can continue to learn as a senior. Seniors don't have to stop learning
new things. They took baby steps with me because I had a brain tumor surgery.
I really turely am continuing to function in this world. If you don't give up on yourself as a Senior neither do Partners In Care.
I really love the boutique I find some good buys
on very nice up to date clothes and purses, small appliances and really good books.
Tuesday is discount day and on my birthday I get a coupon and I really get excited about the birthday card. I even get a Christmas Stocking
with good things that are very helpful.
Thank You Partners In Care
All of the people that volunteer there time are really wonderful kind and caring people that like
helping other. The Director took time to say hi and the gentleman that work in a mangers
position is very professional and educated
and care's about people and seniors.
Thank You to everyone that volunteer's and all

Having retired years ago, my husband and I became very impressed with Partners in Care, both for their resale store in Pasadena which is beautifully organized and for their services to the elder community. I had trained to be a tablet (iPad type device) teacher for people who were shut in and needed ways to email and use the internet. However, due to my surgeries that came up I was unable to do the task. Later, my husband heard about PIC volunteers who do repair work to assist elder people who physically couldn't fix things in their homes or couldn't afford to hire someone. He volunteered over a year ago and is a devoted worker for the organization and a welcomed, friendly repairman to those seniors. When someone becomes a member of PIC, all hours of services and donations of goods to PIC are then recorded as "credits" to them which can later be used to "cash in" for assistance without expense. It's a wonderful system and such a great addition to the Anne Arundel County residents, helping seniors stay in their homes for as long as possible.

I am a second generation Partners in Care volunteer. My mom, Betty Todd, signed and addressed birthday cards for the organization. In 2016, my mother passed away. A few weeks later, I retired after spending two thirds of my life working. I was somewhat lost for months. One day, I went to an event called Boomer Fest, where Partners in Care was looking for volunteers. It made sense to volunteer in their Boutique, first for one day a week, then two, then three. Many of the volunteers have recently lost someone important to them. I met so many nice people. I felt useful again. I also get to buy some cool stuff.

I love Partners in Care. I work in their retail store to alleviate depression. I've met new people and made new friends all while helping a meaningful organization. I thought I'd never use their services, but I fell last year and needed a ride to a meeting. They sent someone to pick me up at home. She drove me to the meeting then drove me home afterward. She was a truly interesting person and I'm glad I met her. This is a fun organization to work for. They enjoy themselves while doing important work. I'm glad I found Partners in Care!

PIC felt like a lifesaver to me. I had lost my Mom & my best friend ,then my cousin & other friends moved to Washington state,Oregon & Co. I felt alone & then Covid hit. I was in/out of the hospital from 2019-2021 having 8 surgeries then lastly falling & breaking & dislocating my wrist requiring surgery with plates & pins. I had terrible times finding rides. Of course I was alone in the hospital something I had never been when my best friend was alive. She always said she was my sister & would be at the hospital with me. Anyway I was giving up & not making Drs appts that I needed but I didn't have rides when a nurse shared Partners in Care information with me. I put my name in but had to wait until it was safe with Covid. Then after it became safer I had my interview & was accepted. I have gotten rides to the dentist when I was having extractions & 2 times for neck & then back injections. The drivers were wonderful people, very kind & helpful, waiting until the procedure was complete & getting me home safe & sound as well as to my appointments on time. I feel much more relaxed knowing that when I need them I can call for a ride. Before PIC I worried constantly about rides. I know PIC is volunteer but it is a huge relief to know they are there. I haven't used them for other things but they help with all kinds of things & it feels good to know that if needed I could call & ask for help & they will try to find what is needed. They are much needed & a huge stress relief in a time where that is truly needed. It has been a hugely stressful & lonely time & just knowing they are there truly helps. Thank you Partners in Care & the drivers I had as well as all who volunteer. You are truly a gift in my life.
Sincerely, Laurie

I learned about this wonderful non-profit organization years ago when I was still working. After I retired and was looking for some place to volunteer, I remembered Partners in Care. Both my husband and I took the introductory class and began volunteering in the Upscale Boutique and Donation Center. It gives us the opportunity to do something worthwhile together. The time I spend volunteering here is of such value to me and to those who reap the benefits of this organization. I have the chance to meet and chat with customers in the boutique. Many of them have such wonderful life stories that they share with me. They frequently tell me how much they love the organization, and the boutique. They say that the boutique is their happy place and they love coming there. I tell them how much we appreciate them. I am truly grateful for the ability to volunteer at Partners in Care. I've been volunteering with Partners in Care Maryland since 2014, and am continually impressed with the wonderful work they're doing. They perform many services to help older community members age in place, including providing transportation (free with volunteer drivers, or at low cost in a handicapped-accessible van), doing shopping, providing handyman services, and many other "member care" services. (Membership involves an in-home interview but is completely free.) I have also availed myself of their services when I was unable to drive (leg injury). They are small, but have an outsized positive impact on their community!

After his wife, my mom, died in 2011 Dad was devastated. Through connections with great friends and family he was able to keep going and eventually make life good again. When he got older his memory issues transitioned to early dementia. He stopped driving. Because his home is in an area that isn’t within walking distance of any activities, he quickly became isolated. As his family we did what we could, but my wife and I work full time and our children, who used to help, went off to college. It became a huge stressor to try to figure out how dad would be able to get out to go shopping, get to medical appointments, attend social activities and otherwise have the contact with fellow people that most of us need and with which Dad thrives.
Initially, Partners in Care was brought to my attention because they offered a volunteer transportation program. When I contacted them, they got back to me immediately, were incredibly friendly, and I learned that they had so many innovative services beyond the transportation. In addition to transportation with wonderful friendly competent volunteers and staff, they provide nonintrusive but extremely valuable personal support, advice and tools to live alone more safely, home repair and much more. They are always willing to talk and work hard to stay in contact with me.
Have you ever received a gift that you didn’t think you would need or didn’t understand what it was initially, and you weren’t even sure you wanted it? But once you learned about it you realized it was extremely useful and you weren’t sure how you ever did without it. Partners In Care is that Gift for my father and me. Due in large part to Partners In Care, and their wonderful staff and volunteers, Dad is on his way to thriving again.

Not only is this a great organization that helps Seniors in our communities, but it builds relationships with them as well. I was extremely fortunate to provide a member with transportation services over several years. In that time frame I was able to build a strong and lasting relationship with the member and their family. Many trips consisted of singing, laughter and quite possibly the greatest smile one could ever see. She loved to smile and it was ever present. I was fortunate enough to be invited to family functions and gatherings as an extended member of the family. On her passing a great honor was bestowed upon me. I was asked and given great privilege by the family to be a pallbearer at the funeral. This kind and meaningful gesture will never be forgotten and has touched me deeply. I feel she has contributed far more to me then I ever have to her. None of this would have been possible without Partners In Care. They exist to help others, but in return are enriched by its members.

The world seems as though it's moving at warp speed. Heck, non-astronaunts are traveling to the edge of space. I know one place that is well grounded and doing marvelous things. That place is Partners In Care Maryland, Inc. For more than 28 years, PIC has worked hard to support the independence of older adults and helped them to stay engaged in their community. PIC offers a number of program services, many guaranteed such as the Community For Life program that offers transportation, handyman and home assessment, member care and social/wellness activities/workshops. These services are fee-based and are designed to help older adults age in their own homes. Buoyed by hundreds of volunteers, members are able to stay connect and informed. PIC also offers volunteer opportunities called service exchange. Everyone has gifts and talents. For each hour you donate, you are able to access PIC service exchange.

I have been here for 4 months and have loved every minute of it. It is a different experience everyday here meeting and helping customers and working with our wonderful volunteers! I am always thanking them for what they do and letting them know how important they are to our organization. With out them we would not exist! One day I thanked a volunteer and told them how much I appreciate the job that they are doing here at partners. She told me she was so happy to be thanked for what she does it brought me to tears!

I have been donating to Partners in Care Maryland for fifteen years. I so respect this charity because I know that all my donations of material goods are being sold at their Upscale Resale Boutique with all the profits going to support their mission. Nothing is more crusial for our community than to have our older folks supported in their desire to stay living in their own hard earned homes as long as possible. I met many of the volunteers from this organization over the years and am always so impressed that they sincerely enjoy and respect the many shut-ins that they serve. So many seniors in our community just need a little bit of help and kind attention to stay knitted into the community and not be lonesome or feel helpless. Everyone is giving from the heart at PIC. I have seen people befriend their fellow volunteers and have such a good time. What could be better? In a world of so many stressors on everyone - PIC is a place that values bringing comfort and kindness.

I've been involved with Partners In Care for almost 20 years. The difference they make in the lives of seniors is immeasurable. We get so many thank yous (verbally and by cards and letters) about how good our volunteers make someone feel as they get them back and forth to their doctor's appointments or the grocery store. I love being a part of this organization.

What a great concept of neighbors helping neighbors. The heart of all the volunteers and staff members is amazing. In a world of "selfies", we see the exception at Partners In Care. Volunteers give of their time and staff members give beyond their job descriptions to make sure members are taken care of. Truly a blessing!
