Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Arts Education

Mission: P.S. ARTS is dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing high-quality arts education to California’s underserved public schools and communities.

Results: P.S. ARTS engages outside evaluators to provide non-biased quantitative program evaluation. Most recently, in June 2014, renowned arts researcher Dr. James Catterall completed a two-year study on the impact of P.S. ARTS programs on students’ development of “creative thinking, behavior, and motivation in the arts, sciences, writing, and social problem-solving.” The study included 300 4th and 5th grade students participating in the P.S. ARTS rotational classroom studio program. Findings show participation in P.S. ARTS programs is associated with significant gains in students’ ability to: express complex ideas accurately and clearly, solve problems creatively, collaborate and empathize with others, and take initiative to produce ideas, designs, and products that are novel and valuable.

Target demographics: P.S. ARTS ensures high-quality, sustainable arts education for children in under-resourced public schools.

Direct beneficiaries per year: We have grown from serving 285 students in one school to over 25,000 students in 50 underserved schools across Los Angeles County and California’s Central Valley; P.S. ARTS also serves nearly 10,000 students and families through our Community Engagement programs.

Geographic areas served: 59 schools throughout Southern and Central California; the participating school districts include Compton Unified, Culver City Unified School District, Greenfield Union, Hawthorne, Inglewood Unified, Lawndale Elementary, Los Angeles Unified, Lost Hills, Reef-Sunset Unified, San Bernadino City Unified, Santa Monica-Malibu, Stockton Unified, Wasco Union, and Wiseburn Elementary

Programs: P.S. ARTS programs align with our mission by applying best practices in education and youth development, particularly with regard to transforming chronically low-performing schools and improving civic, school, and career outcomes for participants. Below is a list of our program offerings: • Classroom Studio Programs: P.S. ARTS provides in-school arts education programs once a week, every week for the entire school year. Our music, theater, and visual arts classes are integrated into the school day. • Extended Learning Programs: P.S. ARTS provides after-school and summer arts programs through the Inside Out Community Arts theater program (IOCA) and our high school program Teen Media Initiative. • Community Engagement Programs: P.S. ARTS aims to provide crucial arts experiences for the entire family. We facilitate free community outreach events such as our Family Art Nights, the TakePART Festival, and various family art days held throughout the school year.

I've had the pleasure of volunteering for P.S. Arts for a few years now. I've also ran and fundraised with their team in the Los Angeles Marathon the past two years. PS. Arts' work is crucial and knowing the impact the program has thousands of kids make it so easy to support this organization anyway I can (including running a marathon!). Thanks for filling our classrooms with creativity, P.S. Arts.

P.S Arts/Inside Out has been a tradition in my family for many years.. All 3 of my sisters and my daughter participated in the program. Through their participation they learned teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills. They had opportunities to express themselves through the Arts and were introduced to various artistic genres through fieldtrips. As they progressed in the program they had opportunities to take on leadership roles. The program was an extension of our family and I always felt safe leaving the kids. Lasting friendships were developed. I would highly recommend this program.

P.S Arts has given me some the most amazing experiences and opportunities that I've had in the past years. I was an Inside Out mentor for 2 years, starting 3. I was in their Neighborhood Arts program since I was little. As a youth mentor I was able to learn new things about myself that allowed me to grow into the young woman that I am today. I've not only become a leader but a role model to those around me. One of my favorite parts about being a mentor with Inside Out was going to camp with the middle school kids in the program. At camp I was able to see the creativity burst throughout each students while creating and practicing their plays. P.S Arts is a great program that allows kids to express themselves through the arts, which I think is very important.

P.S. ARTS is a super hero among Los Angeles arts organizations! Each year thousands of students are truly fortunate to experience the positive influence of the talented, dedicated P.S. ARTS Teaching Artists, who not only teach with a passion in their artistic disciplines, but also instill confidence, accountability and other life skills in their students. A special shout-out to the incredible Inside Out Community Arts program at P.S. ARTS, an award-winning theatre arts program that has a very special way of impacting lives!

P.S Arts truly is an amazing program! I have been apart of a program within P.S arts called inside out community arts as a student for 3 years and I came back to help as a mentor 5 years later. Even in college I continue to try and be involved because I love the impact that this program leaves on children. It is a great feeling of satisfaction when a student breaks out of their shell or gains any type of skill from this program because it really does stick with you all your life. Thanks to this program I have been inspired to continue working with kids and I am pursuing a career in teaching because I want to continue impacting students lives through the arts !

P.S ARTS is a great program that I have luckily been apart of and has helped me grown as a person and leader. The programs that I have been apart of within P.S Arts are “Inside Out Community Arts” and “Teen Media Initiative”. These two programs have had a great positive impact in my life not only have I learned how to express my thoughts about social issues through the arts in (Inside Out), but I also found a great passion for web-design/computer science in (Teen Media Initiative). Which next year, I will be pursuing a double major in Computer Science and in a Pre-Med field. With college only approaching in less than year, I hope to be involved with P.S ARTS down line, giving back to the community.

The PS Arts staff is responsive, engaged and very interested in making sure all students understand how the arts contribute to their greater being. PS Arts is a fabulous organization!
