Mission: Waste reduction and resource efficiency in oregon schools
Programs: Our mission: oregon green schools is dedicated to energizing and engaging students through student-driven activities that advance their understanding and ownership of sustainability. Oregon green schools is a volunteer-driven organization headed by a working board of directors. Our board of directors plans and puts on the annual summit, oversees the regional coordinator program, works on fundraising and development, and supervises a contract administrative staff person. We partner with over 30 different organizations that provide individuals who volunteer to be regional resource coordinators. These coordinators: - provide support and direction to the teacher or other adult volunteer at each school and to the school's student green teams - actively promote the mission and goals of ogs by encouraging schools to adopt the green schools curriculum - work with schools to complete all their requirements to achieve maintain their green school status - aid schools in reaching "merit- and "premier" status, which requires instituting additional waste reduction and energy saving measures the oregon green schools summit, the highlight of our program, is held annually in the spring and serves 4th - 12th grade students from across the state of oregon. The summit serves approximately 250 students and their green team leaders and offers 4 tracks of programming covering energy conservation, water conservation, waste reduction and recycling. In the green schools spotlight session participating schools share their green team experiences in small groups. The event is held in rotating locations throughout the state. The 2017 summit was held at the western mennonite school in salem, oregon. In late 2017, ogs started a year-long sustainability captain program for schools in rural and title i areas that want to become ogs certified. A teacher or staff member associated with the school applies to become the on-site captain and help the school in their sustainability efforts throughout the next year. Captains receive a small stipend, paid out over the year to help cover the time spent in addition to their regular school duties.
