Mission: Opportunity Builders Inc. formerly the Sheltered Workshop of Anne Arundel County Maryland, was founded in 1962 by a group of parents and advocates who wanted more for their children then going to a day care program. The founders had envisioned people with and without disabilities coming together to form a partnership that would generate new vocational training and employment opportunities. A work center was established in an old firehouse and then relocated to a warehouse facility. In 1991, due to space limitations, the program moved to its current location in Hanover, MD. The program expanded to include competitive community placement services and the name was changed to Opportunity Builders Inc. (OBI). Our founders'' vision has materialized over the years and more and more, people with developmental disabilities are active participants in everyday life. At OBI we use individual choice and preferences, accommodation and coaching in matching individuals and employment opportunities. This is the cornerstone of our program.
Programs: Opportunity Builders Inc. programs include an Vocational Training Program, Supported Employment Program, an Adult Development Center, and a Recreation & Leisure Program. Each training component includes job skill and interpersonal skill instruction. Additionally, our Adult Development Center serves individuals who need an intense one-to-one level of training and assistance. These components mesh together to form a comprehensive vocational employment training program. Each component is a stepping stone that creates a path of independence. Services are customized according to the level of assistance needed by an individual. To further prepare our clients, we offer adult basic education classes and music therapy two days a week.
