Meta House was a life changer for me and my children I recommend them to anyone woman in need of help. I’ve learned many skills from Meta House. I have 4yrs and 4 months sober and still keep in contact with staff.

Meta House's philosophy and practice of women's treatment is exceptional, and the staff includes some of the finest professionals/humans you will ever meet. However, the organization is suffering under the CEO (ceo since 2012). Rather than build on the strengths of Meta House employees, she stands in their way and destroys them. She routinely disrespects staff, individually and publicly. During my employment, she humiliated and discriminated against me because of my disabilities and races. After I reported her conduct, she denied me a promotion. I resigned, and the Board of Directors paid me not to be in the same building as her.

Meta House has more than a dozen managers, but ZERO are women of color. Black women are concentrated in the lowest paying, lowest status jobs. When I left, there were ZERO indigenous people employed at all, let alone any in management. This structure prevents any accountability to the communities Meta House serves - about half of Meta House clients are women of color, and Meta House contracts with several Native nations. Although Meta House prides itself on employing people with lived experience in recovery, these people are also concentrated in the lowest paying, lowest status jobs. People in recovery are seen as in recovery only - they are denied professional development and their leadership and vision is unacknowledged or even dismissed as worthless.

The CEO/executive team poured money into a private pay offshoot ("Shorewood House") before conducting any market research as to the feasability of this plan. As a result, Shorewood House sat empty for more than a year, pushing Meta House into deficit and denying treatment beds to people who needed them but could not pay.
