Causes: Hospices, Human Services
Mission: Provide quality compassionate care to hospice patients and their families, and to educate the community in end-of-life care.
Programs: Hospice services include visits by nurses, social workers, therapists, dietitian, chaplain and volunteers. Under the medicare, medical or private insurance hospice benefit, we also provide all medications, medical equipment and supplies related to the terminal diagnosis. We are able to provide services at no charge, in the absence of a third party reimbursement source, through income from the hospice shop, operated by volunteers. We provided hospice services to 204 patients this fiscal year. We offered five six week bereavement support groups to 30 participants and community-based grief counseling at no charge. Our palliative care staff offers consults and telephone follow-up to patients not appropriate for hospice care. Staff provided 24 education sessions on end of life issues.
in collaboration with the city of yreka, senior services were expanded to provide 9,854 congregate meals in three locations, 11,617 home delivered meals in yreka and scott valley, and 7,833 senior bus rides for yreka, grenada, montague and hornbroook. In addition, we provided caregiver support, fall prevention education and the senior information and assistance hotline along with a senior resource direcory and website. 17 volunteers provided 3,056 hours of service for the senior services program.
the madrone house is a 6 bed facility for hospice patients who are unable to remain in their homes. It is staffed 24/7 by nurses, aides, cook and volunteers. It has become a model for rural communities state-wide. Patients rooms are large, with shared baths. Family members are able to spend the night when they wish. Room and board is reasonable. 77 patients called the madrone house home, and we supplemented $11,000 of room and board through donations and shop income. 26 volunteers provided 811 hours of patient care in patient homes and in the hospice house.
