San Francisco and the larger Bay Area need more orgs like Lyrical Opposition. With more and more venues shutting down in the Bay, finding outlets for creative expression—particularly hip hop and spoken word—is a tall task. I’m appreciative of the work Lyrical Ops continues to do in the community, providing countless opportunities for folks to discover, grow, and showcase the talents God blessed them with.

Amazing and raw experience volunteering here! Met some cool and genuine people in this organization, they know exactly what their mission and focus is- they helped me to want to give back creatively too. What this organization is doing, is very much needed for this world esp our generation! Excited to volunteer here again!!

I love Lyrical Opposition!! I’m not from the Bay Area, but even then folks at Lyrical Opposition have welcomed me, and helped me develop my writing and invested in my poetry. Most importantly, they have encourages me a lot to share my story, and use my voice. I really appreciate this non profit, and they are bringing a unique gift to the community.

Lyrical Opposition is an eclectic group of individuals who’ve consistently come together to influence and produce excellent engagement in the areas of community and artistry development.

I’ve had the privilege to see it grow since 2014, from near and afar, into where it’s at and I couldn’t be more proud of the team as it was, is and will be.

Lyrical La Famila is truly just that - family, and one I look forward to seeing expand and continue to make the marks of it’s legacy.

I went to my first LO show about 4 years ago and I’ve been a loyal fan since! I love what they stand for and how much heart n thought they put into anything and everything they do. LO supports the community on so many levels with such generosity; from writing workshops, to providing inspirational talks at schools, to free shows for all to enjoy. This group of creatives really know how to connect with people and make a positive impact. I’m honored to team up with them and support them on their endeavors.

I was invited to a Lyrical Opposition workshop back in 2014. In that first Session I was educated and inspired so much. I was definitely nervous but they made the space feel safe with their Friendly and Encouraging attitudes. I continued to attend their workshops and events and developed into a much better Artist, and had tons more confidence in my craft, which led to larger platforms.

5 years later, I consider them Family, and we continue to grow in Artistry and do life together! I LOVE MY LYRICAL LA FAMILIA!

I came to San Francisco 5 years ago to peruse a career in environmental design. What I didn't know is that my second day in the city I would meet a group that would help change my life for the better. I spent 6 years getting a degree in environmental architecture, but writing and performance have been my passion since I was a child. After a few months of watching the Lyrical Opposition team cultivate artists, curate inspiring events, and encourage people who consider themselves ordinary to discover their inner greatness, I knew that I wanted to be a part of this team. As of today, this organization has helped me on my journey to become a better writer, speaker, and community partner. As a volunteer I've had the opportunity to lead creative workshops, travel and perform across the country, as well as pass on what I've learned to others who are like me - an artist who needed a safe space to grow and become the person I really want to be. I'm excited to see where Lyrical Opposition accomplishes next!

I’m so proud of Lyrical Opposition and the organization that they have become. Lyrical Opposition is a key piece of culture here in the Bay Area. They are helping to shape and curate the idea of a “Beloved Community”. LO is using there gifts to help young people think about their broken environments and the systems that created it. They then encourage them to give voice to it and help them break the chains that have held generations back. The broken and disenfranchised that were once silent now have a voice in Lyrical Opposition. LO is amazing.

Lyrical Opposition is a one-of-a-kind organization, they somehow are able to manuever between different cultures and still be relevant. They would teach electives and after-school programs during the week at high school, then on the weekend, facilitate an open to the public writer’s workshop in San Francisco, then attend and participate in a rap battle at the Back Bar Sofa in San Jose later that evening, the next day, perform spoken word poetry as part of an inspiring Sunday service at a church, then hold and host an open mic at an art gallery later that day. Although it doesn’t make sense, it seems like they are for the culture and for the people, and that is something I can get behind and support.

Not many organizations serve and give back directly into the community it was birthed from, however Lyrical Ops has catered to and crafted the growing culture of awareness throughout the West Coast. Within every performance, revelatory perspectives shine through the music and poetry daring the audience to stay in tune.
Social Injustice and its tumultuous climate are topics rarely strayed away from as LO continues to be authentic and transparent with its listeners and supporters.

Their workshops offer a breakdown of how to master similar skills needed to make an impact and influence the culture by identifying the individuals passion, talent and goals and by giving them an opportunity to use their voice to change the world “one lyric at a time”.

The first time I heared about Lyrical Opposition was at church through a friend. I was thrilled to know about a group that fuses poetry with spirituality to encourage social change in the community. Hearing the good news I attend one of their latest event “Fight evil with Poetry,” in which I truly appreciated the uplifting and educational atmosphere they created in that space. I honestly look forward to The growth of this organization and future events !

I found this collaborative in 2014 by winning a contest on Instagram they held, to meet the lead artists of a band they were hosting at a concert. I went to the concert and not only did I meet those artists but I also met this amazing team Lyrical Opposition . Soon after this I began attending their writing workshops every other weekend in San Francisco where they helped me develop and strengthen my craft in musical artistry. Once they got me to a level where I could perform my pieces for local schools and shows they believed in me and would put me on anytime I was available. They became family to me because it was a safe place to share a vulnerable part of me, my writing and love for music. They truly bring communities together and people from all walks of life and make you feel like family. It’s been about 5 years altogether since I first had the pleasure of acquaintance with Lyrical Oppositon, and I have moved around the country since but I always knew when I was in the Bay Area I could count on the team to be there. Whether it was creatively, to hang, or just a friend to talk to in the group you never feel forgotten with them. Can’t wait to attend many more years of events to come!

I didn't know that I was in need of a community until I came across Lyrical Opposition! Before I met them, I would write anywhere, about anything without a solid intention or theme for any piece I would start and the rare piece that I would finish.

Their writing workshops introduced me to other writers who were at similar crossroads in their craft, choosing between pursuing my dreams and looking for an internship that would steer me far away from the world I wanted to exist in each day.

Through their experienced instructors guidance, I learned how to tackled writer's block, a lack of stage presence and spacing and how to express the way that struggle, art and life made me feel. 'Lyrical Ops' gave me peers, a pack to run with, a tribe to walk with and be vulnerable with as we all put heart to notepad. (Wish I took more pictures). Thanks for unlocking these bars because surely I was captive to stagnation!

Last month I went to an event put on by Lyrical Opposition, Fight Evil with Poetry. It was my first time going to a Lyrical Opposition event. The atmosphere was warm and uplifting - it felt like everyone is welcome. I appreciated the quality of the artistry and liked the variety of performances. From spoken word to an acoustic set, it all flowed nicely. At the end, most people lingered around to talk. It felt like a genuine community of people who are seeking to do good and are after something greater than themselves. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for future events.

Lyrical Opposition has been foundational in my growth, both as an artist and a human being. The creative spaces they create and curate are welcoming, inspiring, and even challenging at times... in the best kind of way! As a brand, and as an organization, Lyricalops has proven their commitment to our community, and in turn, I’ll forever be committed to Lyrical Opposition.

Lyrical Opposition’s vision and work in the community has helped me grow as an artist. The workshops are beneficial, empowering, and developmental. The events are community-oriented and create safe spaces for artistic expression and networking across difference.
