The Philadelphia chapter of Little Brother-Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) provides services which are unique and increasing in need: identifying the isolated frail elderly in order to provide comfort, friendship, and support (as in the form of needs' evaluations and appropriate referrals). With a small core staff and lots of volunteers,LBFE Philadelphia works to improve the quality of life and enable this growing population to remain at home. What is unique about the organization is the respect & dignity with which they treat their clients by acknowledging birthdays, sending flowers, personalized notes or holiday baskets to those that cannot get out - the population most at risk. Similar efforts are extended to those "friends" that are not homebound. Additionally, LBFE offers opportunities to this group to get out more often through the social gatherings and holiday events they sponsor. Not only are the services greatly needed, but such gestures of kindness and respect towards our elder population have been sorely lacking in our culture and LBFE provides a good role model for others to follow.
