Causes: Adult Education, Education, Literacy, Remedial Reading & Encouragement
Mission: To transform the lives of adult learners, both immigrant and u. S. -born, through the power of literacy, education, and advocacy.
Programs: The literacy network of south berkshire, inc. (litnet) has been providing free, one-on-one tutoring sessions for adults since 1991. Our curriculum offers english for speakers of other languages (esol), citizenship test preparation, hiset test preparation, and adult basic education to better serve the large population of immigrants who live and work in berkshire county. By providing fundamental educational support, litnet strives to give our adult students the tools they need to succeed in their jobs, support their families, and engage with their local communities. At any given time during the year, litnet supports more than 100 student/tutor pairs. During 2017, our most recently completed fiscal year, we worked with 103 new students and 56 new tutors. At the close of 2017, we had 132 active tutor/student pairs. During 2017, nine students reached significant educational milestones including receiving their high school equivalency certificate, enrolling at berkshire community college, and becoming certified in medical coding. One student became an american citizen,at least 8 students advanced their careers by attaining better jobs, and 11 students reached significant cultural or social milestones including buying a house, getting married, securing an apartment, learning to take the bus, and receiving a driver's license.
