For over the last 3 years I have worked as a tutor at the Kern Adult Literacy Center. I have worked with students who had low self esteem, but as they started to learn to read, their self esteem skyrocketed. The one-on-one tutoring is the big key to them overcoming shyness, also with each passing day I see their drive to excel and to beat away the chains of ignorance that had held them down.
The staff is excellent, they listen to both tutor and student, they note what works and what doesn't. This in a way has built sort of a family atmosphere. They care about the students and welcome them to drop back from time to time to let them know how they are doing.
It has been a rewarding experience - that of tutoring some forty total students over the past years.
Using the Laubach Method, in the early years, and continuing the philosopy of Frank Laubach, "Each One Teach One", benefitted both my students and I.
My firm belief in education is the fact that Reading and understanding that subject enriches one's life immeasureably. It is the basis for all learning that follows.
Volunteerism has truly touched MY LIFE!
KALC has made doors open for me because I have the tools to be able to read and better understand things around me.
Kern Adult Literacy Council has helped thousands of people since it was founded. The volunteers work with people getting their GEDs, those learning English as a second language and those just needing to learn to read. We have several programs now working with families to enable parents to read and work with their children. It is very rewarding to see how lives change as a result of being able to read or to see someone get their GED and go on to college or to a new job. I tutored for a while myself and it was an incredible experience. Our staff and volunteers are outstanding.
The Kern Adult Literacy Council is an outstanding non-profit that provides a much needed service to Kern County residents. The rate of illiteracy is extremely high in Kern County, and the Kern Adult Literacy Council provides free services to combat that problem. With the generous support of individuals and corporations, the Council will continue to improve lives through literacy!
