This nonprofit began by seeking a taxpayer-funded loan in the amount of $15,000 with no interest from the City of Kent in 2012 with no viable financial planning. Citizens were astounded and expressed to City Council between 2012 and 2013 that taxpayers did not feel that there was a viable plan for the nonprofit to survive or to be able to repay the debt and that taxpayers were against this use of taxpayer funds. A citizen's group filed a court case but lost in Portage County, Ohio. Nearly five years later, the group has requested the City of Kent to default on $10,000 of the taxpayer loan because they have restored the house and can't afford the burden. The City agreed to release them from the $10,000 taxpayer-funded loan without penalty and without much discussion despite two council members in disagreement at the February 2017 meeting. Much of this information is available through the City of Kent Council meeting minutes of 2012-2017 and Portage County, Ohio court dockets. In addition, the "historic" structure was not eligible for historical status and simply houses a few attorney offices and a public restroom with a rental space that occasionally houses pop-up vendors.
