Mission: The joint center for political and economic studies, inc. (the joint center) contributes to the national interest by helping black americans participate fully and effectively in the political and economic life of our society.
Programs: Health policy institute (hpi): the joint center health policy institute (hpi) was established in 2002 with a grant from the kellogg foundation. Hpi conducts research and policy analysis to build support for efforts to ensure that all americans have equitable opportunities to live healthy lives. Its work informs not only policies and policymakers, but also support the efforts of scholars, community groups, public health professional and others working to achieve health equity. Hpi engages in many activities, including research and information dissemination; policy workshops; forums and conferences; technical assistance for community-based organizations; media relations; and outreach to minority leaders and their organizations.
civil engagement & governance: the joint center's civic engagement and governance institute builds upon the joint center's record of leadership in encouraging black participation in public affairs and supporting networks of black elected and appointed official. The joint center continues to be the preeminent source of information on all matters relating to political and civic participation and public opinion in the african american community, as well as the impact of black voters on elections. It monitors, tracks and analyzes the views and voting habits of african americans, analyzes national economic trends, minority business and human capital development and health policy.
media and technology institute: the joint center media and technology institute (mti), launched in 2008 and operational in 2009, is the second of four core institutes being developed under the presidential vision. Mti conducts studies of how the media industry and emerging communications technologies can become avenues of advancement for people of color. Research is focused on technologies related to new media, the trend of convergence and its implications across sectors from a social justice perspective, the impact of existing policy and regulation for the telecommunication and media industries, and the broader implications of media trends, including private equity ownership, participation, access and coverage of people of color. Mti seeks to inform policy dialogues and to align with other joint center initiatives to support policy development and action.
the institute also engages in a series of outreach activities, such as press and legislative briefings, conferences and stakeholder trainings that promote its groundbreaking publications.
