Mission: When a child is born with a severe hearing loss, the impact on the parents and the problems facing the child are staggering. John Tracy Clinic is a place where parents of young deaf children can find hope, guidance and encouragement. Its purpose is to train and support parents in helping their young deaf children develop the communication skills necessary to reach their full potential. The Clinic was founded by Louise Tracy, wife of actor Spencer Tracy, whose son, John, was born deaf.
Programs: John Tracy Clinic offers all free services, including audiological testing, parent-infant classes, preschool, parent support groups, teacher training and worldwide correspondence education. At both its Los Angeles and Long Beach sites, the Clinic operates a Demonstration Home to guide parents of deaf or hard-of-hearing infants in learning how to use daily opportunities to encourage spoken language development. At the main Los Angeles site, a Demonstration Preschool focuses on the child's language, auditory, speech, social and cognitive development. Additional educational offerings include a correspondence course in English and Spanish, a deaf-blind course for parents of children with vision and hearing loss, a graduate program leading to a Master's Degree and Credential in Deaf Education, and advanced professional studies via the Internet.
