Mission: Ibrf's mission is multifaceted, with a vision toward advancing cutting-edge brain discoveries for application in diagnosis and treatment. * research: to encourage, support, design, conduct, and direct novel neuroscientific research studies worldwide. * education: to provide state-of-the art training, educational programming, lecture series, research presentations, and conferences that share groundbreaking research findings and novel, theoretical diagnostic/treatment paradigms in the neurosciences. * technological advancement: to develop new, innovative brain mapping, imaging, and diagnostic technology to advance the treatment of brain injury, disorders, diseases, and dysfunction. * international and multi-center collaboration: to create highly functioning networks of collaborative research relationships that connect multidisciplinary teams of international experts across a variety of research and treatment venues.
Programs: Severe disorders of consciousness:ibrf has developed dr. Defina's advanced care protocol/multicare protocol (acp/mcp) that utilizes targeted neuromodulation procedures to normalize the brain's electrochemical environment to improve brain function. This year, ibrf placed sdoc programs in a variety of hospital/nursing/rehab facilities with implementation of the protocol. These sites were both inthe united states and abroad. Ibrf has forged new collaborations with medical communities in saudi arabia, morroco, united arab emirates, and cuba. In addition, ibrf continues to execute its $6. 4 million u. S. Defense study grant to examine the safety and efficacy of the acp/mcp.
traumatic brain injury:ibrf continues to work collaboratively in research with dr. Max hilz of nyu and dr. Alvaro pascual-leone of harvard university for improved treatments for traumatic brain injury. Diagnostic and treatment tools such as ans (autonomic nervous system monitoring) and tms (transcranial magnetic stimulation) are being validated as two of the most prominent tools to tackle the complexities of traumatic brain injury and sudden death syndrome. Drs. Philip schatz and rosemarie moser continue to make advances in the area of mild traumatic brain injury and sports concussion. They co-authored a landmark article that was published in the journal of pediatrics, the first empirical study to document efficacy of the use of cognitive and physical rest as treatment in concussion. This was also presented as part of the 4th international consensus conference on concussion in sport in zurich, switzerland. Dr. Rosemarie moser was appointed to the expert panel on pediatric traumatic brain injury of the centers for disease control and prevention to develop u. S. Standards. Ibrf focused on developing research protocols for mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder in the military. This was prompted by the request of the u. S. Army.
neurodegenerative, developmental, and related disorders:ibrf has begun research in the use of infrared light therapy combined with nutraceuticals and electrical stimulation protocols and neurofeedback for dementia. Ibrf continues international collaborations to conduct research on neurophysiological diagnostic and treatment modalities in this area.
post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd), post-menopausal syndrome (pms), post-partum depression (ppd): clinical translational research studies have been and continue to be conducted through the ibrf. Ibrf along with dr. Eugene lipov has created a research protocol using a proprietary combination of the following neuromodulation technique; stellate gaglion block, qeeg - neurofeedback and nutraceutical formulations for a novel treatment paradigm for these disorders.
The IBRF has the best of alternative advanced treatments and conventional medicine to begin with with a staff and board members considered to be a list of who's who in brain injury and brain disorders. The admissions director of Kessler Institute described the IBRF to me as " no place like it in the country"..on top if that we all know how often to get an appointment at a doctors you have to wait months sometimes. Twice the clinical Dr at the IBRF Dr Fellus ,who is as good as you find in the country, asked me if I could get the brain injured patient to him the next day from Pitssburgh ! The founder of the the IBDF ,Dr DeFina decided to start the organization to attempt to do more to help the brain injuried and brain disordered cause through advanced ground breaking approaches because conventional medicine at times wasnt achieving the goal of recovery well enough and to help even those without means. There are no guarantees with much in life, but from my experience with the medical staff at the IBRF they are well beyond the help from " other "pretty good doctors which brought about a greater peace of mind your loved one was getting their best shot at a potential recovery. Thank all of you at the IBRF for all you do.
