I had my first encounter with InsideOUT Writers about last year when I volunteered at their Writers' Retreat at Central Juvenile Hall at the request of one of my Sociology professors who teaches for them. Now, almost exactly a year later I am fortunate enough to be working with them as a volunteer Intern and helping them to plan this years Retreat. From day one I have been amazed, impressed and humbled by the work that they do with their students both inside the halls and their alumni, who continue to work with them after getting out. Every member of the InsideOUT Writers team (staff, volunteer teachers, mentors, etc.) is dedicated to making positive changes in the lives of their students and alumni not only through providing them with creative outlets (writing circles), but also through providing them with the necessary resources to develop and grow within their personal and professional lives. What's really amazing is seeing all of their hard work pay off first hand through conversations with alumni and the evolution of students' writing coming from inside the halls. I am honored to work with this organization (which I have frequently called my "dream organization" since starting this Internship back in November 2012) and feel as though it has played a huge part in my own self-discovery and the development of my educational and professional goals.
