Mission:
Innocence Project New Orleans (IPNO) represents innocent prisoners serving life sentences in Louisiana and Mississippi, and assists them with their transition into the free world upon their release.
IPNO works in the states with the country''s highest incarceration rates and the highest rates of wrongful conviction in the country. By identifying and remedying cases and causes of wrongful conviction, we engage in high impact, frontline advocacy in the courts of law and public opinion, and lead community-based responses into the mistakes made by our criminal justice system.
Results: During its first decade, IPNO won the freedom or exoneration of 21 wrongly convicted prisoners who had served a total of nearly 420 years in prisons between them.
Target demographics: free innocent, life sentenced prisoners.
Geographic areas served: Louisiana and south Mississippi
Programs: During 2014, ipno continued to investigate and litigate cases of innocent, life-sentenced prisoners in louisiana and south mississippi. By the end of the year, ipno had freed or exonerated 24 clients since 2001. In the course of the year we did investigation and litigation on over 30 cases. We have over 4,500 requests for help from prisoners in louisiana and mississippi. We also receive case recommenfations and referrals from judges, lawyers, members of the public, journalists, and even prosecutors. Ipno won compensation judgements for two louisiana exonerees.
