The Homeless Empowerment Program (HEP) played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. As a child, my family and I faced immense hardships, but HEP provided us with the support, stability, and resources we desperately needed to move forward. Their dedication to empowering families like mine gave us the opportunity to rebuild our lives.
Through their programs, I not only found safety and structure but also the inspiration to dream bigger. Today, I am proud to have recently graduated with my Master of Social Work (MSW) and am committed to serving others just as HEP served me. The values of compassion, service, and perseverance instilled in me during my time with HEP remain the driving force in my career and life.
I will forever be grateful to HEP for giving my family hope during our darkest times and helping me break the cycle of hardship. Their impact reaches far beyond immediate relief—it builds futures.
If you’re considering supporting or partnering with HEP, know that their work truly changes lives. I am living proof of that.
I'm a volunteer in the kitchen and what I love about HEP is you can connect with the community! It's wonderful to actually see continued progress & development for a non profit organization helping those in need!.
I began my relationship with HEP 14 years ago as a board member. In 2016, I transitioned to serving as a volunteer. So I have witnessed the uplifting nature of HEP from multiple angles. I can’t imagine any organization serves those in need any better. The staff enjoys working with each other and the clients who respond with eye popping numbers. Nearly 90 percent of families and veterans both do not return to homelessness after they leave HEP. Volunteers frequently interact with HEP’s senior leadership team. That doesn’t happen at many non profits. I can tell you that from experience. Volunteering there has many benefits not the least of which is that I enjoy my time there. In summary, they are a tremendous example of a successful business model.
I have been involved as a volunteer and a donor for HEP since 1992. This organization is one of the most honest and reputable charities I have ever dealt with. Their mission for helping those in need is one filled with compassion and a sense of love for the entire Pinellas County area. I intend to continue supporting HEP into the future and beyond.

Homeless Empowerment Program came into my life in 1993 when I was looking for a volunteer experience. I felt a part of something big from the first time I walked into the office. There was no doubt in my mind that this group of people and organization was truly the real thing. Their goal in helping those who were in need with both the basics and then later a truly comprehensive program was foremost in their hearts. Through the years HEP has grown to a prime example of how we can make a difference in lives. I feel blessed that I have been a part of that goal and continue to support all they do. I still volunteer and donate monetarily to continue their success. There is no doubt when I donate to this program. I know the first thing in their minds is the welfare of those they serve. If you are looking for a charity worthy of your trust, look no further than Homeless Empowerment Program!

Twenty years ago I was a resident at HEP after losing everything from illness. Fifteen years ago I returned to HEP to volunteer. There is likely no amount of time/talents I could contribute to fully pay back or forward the gratitude and appreciation for all HEP has helped me through the years.
I had the pleasure of being assigned to hep while in Americorps assignment to assist with Veterans at the VET Center on main site What a wonderful experience. the people I met that worked with the veterans and for the veterans were great. My best experiences were the veterans I worked with from playing bingo, to helping with questions, to listening to their hopes and dreams. exciting to see them focus on and work on their issues and see them moving into their own places. The fun we had stay late for football games all the way up ho Superbowl
I left Americorps Senors in Service in July 2023. I continue to volunteer on Fridays. heck whey else can you the o and put together pavers for the garden .talk to Vets about what's on their mind or just be there to listen. Get several smiles every week. Elaine and Fatima are great to work with. yes HEP is best in my book
HEP provides a comprehensive range of services including emergency and transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, mental and physical health services, daily meals, and more. They focus on empowering individuals and families, including veterans, to achieve self-sufficiency. HEP's holistic approach ensures that every aspect of a participant's needs is addressed, from basic necessities to workforce development and educational support.
Their campus is designed to foster a supportive community environment, featuring various programs such as the HEP Urban Empowerment Garden, which provides therapeutic gardening opportunities and fresh produce for residents. The organization also runs a thrift store and organizes events to engage the community and raise funds.
HEP's impact is significant, with a notable increase in the number of homeless veterans served and substantial efforts dedicated to homeless children. Their success stories highlight the transformative effect of their programs, with many participants overcoming significant personal challenges to regain stability and independence.
To get involved, HEP offers various ways to contribute, including volunteering, donating, and participating in events. They also provide opportunities for individuals to take tours of their campus or request speakers to learn more about their mission and services.
I have had the privilege of volunteering at HEP for the past two years, focusing on planning and donation efforts. Witnessing firsthand the incredible impact this organization has on families and veterans, I am immensely proud to be part of such a dedicated and transformative nonprofit. The work they do truly changes lives, and I am honored to contribute to their mission.
I have served on the HEP board for several years. Over the years, I have served on a number of non-profit boards. HEP is by far the best and most effective non-profit organization I’ve ever known. The board members and staff are incredibly dedicated to, and successful in, empowering the homeless.
I have never experience a nonprofit organization like HEP. The diverse services they offer to clients add so much value to their life’s, and the people that work at HEP are dedicated, positive, energized to do whatever needs to be done. Besides that they feel very proud to work at HEP.
The residents seem peaceful and content to have such organization behind helping them to get ahead and in the right path to self sufficiency. I feel proud to volunteer and donate to HEP, and ask all my friends to take their donations to HEP because I know that is the place where the donations help the most residents!!!! Maria

You must tour the Homeless Empowerment Program campus to really get an idea of how this organization makes the difference on the community. When I try to explain to someone what this program is all about it gets challenging to communicate all the services they offer to its community. I believe this is the #1 nonprofit organization and that is the reason I volunteer there.
I am a volunteer at HEP and I am always impressed by the variety of services and programs HEP offers to the men, women and children in its shelter. HEP is truly a great cause to support!
Homeless Empowerment Program in Clearwater FL is my charity of choice. I never thought I would dedicate so much time, energy, and money to a charity. The people that work there, marketing, volunteers, kitchen and thrift shop are smart and caring. It truly warms my heart to give to them, so much so I convinced my fraternity brothers (22) to also adopt and support HEP. Helping the homeless the right way, a roof, meals, medical, dental, jobs and education it doesn't get any better. Many of us are veterans so giving back to veterans in need is an awesome feeling. We are constantly looking for more ways to support HEP (Homeless Empowerment Program).
I am thrilled to serve on the board of the Homeless Empowerment Program. Our organization's commitment to addressing the challenges faced by homeless individuals has had a profound impact on their lives and our community as a whole. From shelter and food programs to job training and social services, we are making a real difference. The dedication of our team and the support of our donors are the driving forces behind our success. Together, we are changing lives, one step at a time, and I am honored to be a part of this incredible journey.
HEP is a wonderful nonprofit to work with — it is always so rewarding & organized when I volunteer with them! They do so much for the people of our community & are very creative with things like the community garden.
What is most impressive about HEP and the work that they do is their success rate in transitioning the homeless to self-sustaining members of society. 98% of the families that enter into HEP's program acquire their own independent housing. They not only improve the community, but also the quality of life in the individuals that enter their program.
Homeless Empowerment’s board & committee members are passionate about supporting a solutions based approach with its many program elements. Beyond navigating clients out of homelessness, HEP addresses Veterans’ unique needs; food insecurity; children’s needs in back to school supplies, grooming & clothing; vertical gardens on campus providing produce for the campus dining hall; workforce interface and training; campus dental clinic & campus hair salon each staffed by professional community volunteers. The hair salon was built and furnished by Salon Centric, a national company inspired by the differences made by HEP in the community & in the lives of its clients. A 42 year model of success that has been emulated nationwide, HEP is outstanding among other charities.
The greatest gift from HEP to its clients is dignity. Upon arrival at HEP they felt embarrassed at their appearance and were lost at how to reenter the job market. They receive a haircut or styling, clothes for work, dental work, training for a job and assistance on how to conduct a job interview - even how to shake hands. Now people who felt no confidence in themselves, their appearance or abilities were transformed. My last visit there I found these same residents now greeted me when I walked in the door, smiled, asked how they could help me and looked me in the eye doing so. Restoring dignity is about giving back the things we often consider minor but are integral to HEP residents resuming a place in society. Every individual who succeeds produces an entire string of human successes as they bring entire families along with them. I support HEP and cannot say enough about how the team there does all those "minor" things that restore the dignity necessary to restore lives.
The Homeless Empowerment Program is an amazing nonprofit that not only helps people through their current situation but also sets them up for a better future. Volunteering there was a very rewarding experience.
As a volunteer dentist, I have had the opportunity to see HEP clients develop a positive attitude toward their health & many other aspects of their life. I feel blessed to be a small part of this empowerment.
This has to be the best run non-profit I have ever been involved with! And it continues to enjoy good growth. My husband and I began donating to HEP 9 years ago. I was so impressed with the organization, I kept telling all my co-workers to go by, take the tour, and they ALL became givers and donators to HEP. Go by for yourself. Ask for the tour, you'll get the history, they'll show you around the campus, it is totally impressive. And the expectations of the residents to then give back after they get back on their feet is incredibly successful! I highly recommend this nonprofit to anyone I know who has a heart to assist others in their quest for a better life! And I recommend it as a giving foundation strong in its faith, strong in its leadership, etc.
I volunteered in the learning center. I taught dance to the kids some days and others I just spent time with them. Every single person I came in contact with was wonderful, from the dining hall to administration. I would whole-heartedly recommend this organization to anyone.
I have experienced HEP's impact on the lives of those who society usually shuns. They go out their way to help them. I can't say enough good things about people who work and volunteer at HEP.
What a wonderful organization! We need more programs like this one throughout the state/country. I live in an area where the homeless population is out of control. HEP is a great role model for how a program should be run!
I started volunteering at HEP in May of this year. I requested a tour of the campus and was surprised by how many residential housing complexes they have on their 8 acre campus. The urban gardens, workforce center, own dental office really helps them empower the homeless people they serve.
I can also say that every one I work with is always upbeat and fun to be around. They really strive for a positive environment.
I'm thrilled to be apart of this wonderful organization.
HEP excels at helping the most needy people. I volunteer in the kitchen and the food served has been rated by residents and visitors has the best in Clearwater. The counselling staff are extremely considerate and a recent set of visitors returned with five star reports on how impressed they were.
HEP does amazing work not only for their residents and clients but for the community. It is always a pleasure volunteering with them!
I have had such a positive experience volunteering at HEP for over 5+ years now. The staff and volunteers truly care about the residents who are staying on campus and support HEP's Mission.
At HEP they provide counseling, support, and training, making it possible for even the long term homeless to be rehabilitated to such a degree that they can find their feet once more and also develop their feeling of self-worth and self-respect. A homeless shelter is more than just a means to keep displaced people off of the street.
I am proud of what HEP stands for and also love being a volunteer.
I've been volunteering with HEP for about a year now and every experience has been positive! You can tell each staff member really cares about the clients and the services they provide. There's no other program like this in the area and I am proud to support them.
HEP is a life saving g place for so many people in our community. From the dental clinic to the thrift store, this organization is full of people who care about other people. Their mission truly helps put people back in their feet. Our community is a better place because of HEP!
I've been working as a volunteer with HEP since 2015 and I hope they never ask me to leave. HEP does so many wonderful things for our community and they are really just a blessing. I pray they are around for decades to come.
HEP is a wonderful organization! I enjoy volunteering for them. They truly help people in the community who needs assistance by providing housing, food, re-entering the workforce, support for their children and really giving them a new lease on life. I am blessed and honored to support them with donations and my time as they continue their efforts!
HEP is a generous and giving organization that is full of heart and has helped so many people in need. Their programs, housing and community really get people in need on their feet and the support they need to move on and better themselves. I can’t say enough about the amazing things they provide and offer from the dental services to the kitchen that provides delicious and healthy meals to the Veterans housing and program.
HEP is a fantastic organization making a powerful impact on individuals and families in the community. I am proud to support their mission. Keep up the great work, HEP!
It is a pleasure to volunteer alongside such a compassionate and caring staff at HEP. Everyone there has a loving and giving heart. They provide important and, oftentimes, critical services with respect and dignity for their clients.
We are proud to be a small part of HEP.
Our community is blessed to have this organization supporting it! HEP works tirelessly to help people get back on their feet in a safe, secure environment. My daughter and I have had the privilege of volunteering with HEP. It gives us an opportunity to support others and our community while contributing to our own learning and success. HEP is a great reminder that we can all play a part in helping each other live our best life!

HEP is a great place to volunteer! The people are always helpful, friendly, and appreciative of your time. It feels good to know the effort you give is helping other people in a meaningful way. My daughter even did her service learning project for HEP and was able to help raise money, donate supplies, and bring awareness to the great work HEP does!
My Granddaughter works for HEP. I have never heard of a Foundation that does the work that HEP does. I am very impressed with their mission and proud to be able to support Megan and HEP.
I've been familiar with HEP's efforts and positive effects on the Clearwater community for over 20 years. Not only do I jump at the chance to contribute and participate in any of their charity events and fundraisers, but I have seen first hand the impact they have on those in need. From single parents needing a boost to get back on their feet to veterans just looking for a way to fit back into society, the resources and staff made available through this great organization have made a real difference in countless lives. I'm sure there are aspects of their work that I don't know about, but whatever they do to try and help people is done effectively and with a caring heart.
This country and world would be a better place if there was an HEP in every community. I applaud them for providing such a valuable service and encourage them to continue working to improve the lives of so many in need in our community.
Keep up the great work.
Our daughter works for HEP and we couldn't be happier supporting them! They have an incredible mission and the staff there is really dedicated to helping their clients. We had never heard of a shelter that provides this kind of service before and we have been nothing but impressed. We are proud to continue supporting HEP and our Megan!
HEP is an amazing organization helping those in need get back on their feet. I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering for them for a number of years now. If you want to donate your time for a great cause, this is a wonderful organization to volunteer for. I have nothing but great things to say about them. Thank you HEP!
I have been volunteering with HEP for a number of years. My primary role is working in the kitchen - prepping and serving food for the residents. HEP provides a comprehensive and wonderful service to the residents and helps them get back on their feet by offering all the services they need - dental, medical and counseling - and much more. The meals served are of a very high quality and thoughtfully prepared. I think HEP is a fantastic organization in every sense of the word and provides an important service to our community!

I am a volunteer with HEP, primarily prepping and serving food in the kitchen where residents receive their meals. Not only do the residents receive high quality and creative meals, but I, as a volunteer, always feel that my time and service is appreciated. HEP's goal is to break the cycle of homelessness and so many resources are available to help people get back on their feet and return to a functioning life with a job and a home. Those who, for some reason, are unable to, have a forever home with HEP. I cannot say enough good things about this organization!
My family and I have been strong supporters of HEP since it's inception. It was my daughter's 5th grade Christian elementary school mission. She ultimately helped HEP out professionally as an attorney. I have been a member of Women Who Care since it started. It's a great part of HEP, as it helps the children who are clients of HEP with educational programs. My husband and I are also members of The Green Society giving annually to further the excellent programs that HEP offers to help those in need get the extra help they need to get their lives in order to live fully functioning lives.
This is a top-notch homeless program - not in the city, not in the state, but in the country! A model for other aspiring programs to serve struggling people and help them reintegrate themselves. I cannot say enough about the work that they do.
I am so impressed with HEP. I have been a volunteer in the kitchen for about a year and a half. I love the quality and care that is taken by all to better serve the residents.

HEP is an amazing organization, helping people to become independent and successful. I have never found another organization filled with such warm, loving and helpful people as you find at HEP. If you are looking for a good organization to volunteer your time to or to donate assets to, this should be at the top of the list.
My husband Tim & I contribute monthly to this worthwhile charity because it gives back, it truly gives back. From helping the families plant gardens for food, to refurbishing bikes so their families can get to work and earn enough for a car someday, to teaching them educational things so more opportunities for employment can come their way, it's all given in the spirit of giving back. Way to go HEP, once again. You deserve to be on this list!
Despite their modest size HEP should be a national model for helping the homeless. HEP's outstanding approach and execution has evolved from best practices around the world. But, the proof is in all of the lives that they have helped and continue to help in our community. HEP is not just about lending a helping hand, but a holistic approach to get struggling people back into housing and the opportunity to live a fulfilled life. Simply put, HEP the gold standard for homelessness organizations.
I have been involved with the HEP Therapy Dog program as a volunteer working with both the Veteran's Program and the Summer Bridge Program. Both are excellent programs that provide the residents of HEP with what they need. I am so impressed that they have computer training and job placement services right on campus. The addition of the hydroponic garden and green house is a huge plus and teaches residents how to grow food to provide for themselves and to help feed HEP residents. The Thrift Store is well maintained and donations are always welcome and again provide direct assistance to those in need. I have worked at another homeless shelters and feel HEP does a much better job in comparison. I rate HEP with 5 stars...Far exceeds expectations! This is Therapy Dog Rudy.
My family and I loved helping out serving dinner and lunch to the guests at HEP. It was good to see their appreciation. It was also a good way to teach my 14-year old son the importance of giving back to the community.
Why should you and I contribute to HEP
HEP is very unique by going beyond the daily needs of temporary shelter and food:
Provides emergency and transitional housing.
Licensed Medical and Mental Health services on site.
Special support and housing for Veterans
Partnerships with Community Resources
Success rate of ~90% exit to permanent housing
A 4 STAR rating by Charity Navigator for financial accountability & management and program excellence
I have been a volunteer at HEP for more than 6 years. During the pandemic, I was not able to work because all volunteer jobs were taken over by staff in order to protect the volunteers. I have missed helping very much and am anxiously awaiting the return of normalacy when I can once again offer my services. HEP is an outstanding organization and the staff and volunteer workers are all kind, caring, people who work tirelessly to serve those less fortunate. They make an extraordinary difference in the community by providing care and a way out of homelessness. Sincerely, Lynne Read

I have voulunteered working in the kitchen serving lunch for about 5 years. I enjoy helping and contributing in a small way to help those less fortunate. HEP serves wonderful nutritious meals to its clientele and treats everyone with respect.
I have worked as a volunteer for HEP for a few years. This charity is competently and compassionately managed. It is a joy to work with the staff.
This is a great nonprofit organization. It helps people to get back on their feet again. They are fed and given housing but it requires them to give back. They volunteer in the community too. I wouldn’t volunteer anywhere else as I see how important it is and how valued the volunteers are. My job was in nonprofit so I know that HEP should receive this award.
I love everything about HEP - the mission, the community, the volunteers, and what they're doing! You would never know that this 8-acre community is in your own back yard! I love to support local, and getting involved in organizations that are making a big difference. I, of course, vet each organization before giving monetarily. Homelessness is a real issue in our society and HEP does give the money & services to support their clients who really need the "hand up". So happy HEP exceeds all expectations and is the best place to invest :)
HEP is a great organization, and is truly helping the homeless community. My work has been supporting HEP for the past few years through volunteerism, monetary sponsorship , and even serving as advisors on Resource Committees. What I love about HEP is that they are not just a homeless shelter, they give resources and services for the client to "help themselves", in every area needed to gain self-sufficiency. I would highly recommend HEP to anyone wanting to get involved in their local community and make a big impact for those in need.
Hi. My name is Victoria and myself and my 2 kids need help really badly. We had a house fire 4 months ago today. I’m a struggling single mom and had no homeowners ins at the time. My kids are 15 and 18. My 18 year old is autistic with ptsd and learning disabilities and had been on disability for many years. My 15 year old (Paris German)is a patient of yours. I can’t remember our caseworker and we lost a lot of important paperwork in the fire She had reconstructive spine surgery for chronic scoliosis with the help of Shriners a year ago. I also suffer from PTSD which I was handling until I became homeless.
I “had” a group of Scientologist helping. But they literally “abandoned” us as we have no desire to become Scientologist. They also would make my 18 year old cry by telling her she isn’t autistic. They insisted they could get it out of her. It was a really hard situation to handle whilst trying to remain great full for any help.
At this point I have done a ton of demo work removing charred Sheetrock and scrubbing the walls in my home. I’m working on obtaining a remodel permit but again only myself to do everything. I’ve never done electrical before but I have done construction previously a decade ago in NY.
we are so unbelievably desperate for help.
my home was remodeled prior to us and the damage is only new construction in 10% of the house. The original Plaster and laugh construction is untouched. The structure has not been compromised in any way. The fire was not able to spread in the walls or rafters. We so desperately want to go home.
Im an American citizen born in Fl. I have no criminal record. I don’t even have a moving violation on my driving record. We are good people. We always try to help others in need but now it’s us 3 girls.
if I have to do this totally alone I don’t know when we will be able to go home.
Im begging you from the bottom of my heart to pease please please help us. Our whole family is torn apart. My kids have to sleep at friends houses and I sleep in my car with my dogs. I can’t lose my dogs too, we almost lost them in the fire if it wasn’t for my neighbor bravely running in to save them they would have been gone. They are much loved family members and emotional support for all 3 of us.
Idont know what else to say. We are a good family in major distress over this. If you can find it in your heart to help us we will be forever grateful.
sincerely,
I have volunteered with the HEP kitchen and thrift store beginning in Sept 2017. This organization puts clients first. You can tell the message is "service first" with no worries that executive leadership is profiteering. All actions and focus are put towards helping those in need. There is a feeling of a "Community helping the community" when you speak with employees and other volunteers. I will be continuing my service with HEP indefinitely while recommending others join in the fight!
Employees from St. Petersburg College have donated household goods and clothing to this wonderful organization. Our Career Service Employee Staff organize drives twice a year.
Once you schedule a pick-up for donations, their staff arrives on time and courteous. This is a wonderful organization and a great cause. Thank you HEP for all that you to empower the homeless. F. Fuentes
I wanted to give a shout out to all the staff and board at HEP. As I work with various service organizations and partner as a church administrator at Skycrest Community Church theirlevel of care and execution in meeting needs is superior across the board. We love partnering with them and appreciate their presence in the community for caring for those less fortunate and the men and women who have served our country that need assistance into the market place and life at large. May God continue to bless and grow your areas of ministry and service to the community. You are making a difference!
I have been supporting and volunteering at HEP since 2008. This is a fabulous organization helping so many people back to their feet.
What an incredible addition to our community: a non-profit campus that's truly changing lives. Every time I volunteer, I'm inspired by the residents and the staff. Our church group is now volunteering in the kitchen, and it's such a happy experience to be there and see the residents grow, change and evolve. Kudos to a powerful, effective and compassionate non-profit.
We've been contributors as well as volunteers for HEP. The program helps many people and they are always looking for better ways to serve the public.
you can never get in to the place everytime you call they give you the run around tell you they never have beds open when they do and they only help wemon out before the guys needs better management
I've volunteered at several non-profits and HEP is the most impressive by far. Their care and commitment to their cause is unsurpassed and they are so respectful and thankful for the help their volunteers provide.

I have been a HEP volunteer since July 2018. I work on Saturdays from 9 am - 1 pm at the Veteran's Clubhouse. I have met many veterans who have benefited from the HEP program. These men and women range in age from seniors to what I think of as youngsters (25-30). All have recently been homeless; some have had drug and/or alcohol problems; some suffer from PTSD and/or medical issues. If a veteran is ready to address the problems that put him or her on the streets HEP is there to help. Not just with shelter, clothes and decent food but also with guidance in setting goals, shuttle service to the VA hospital so they can keep their appointments and giving them a place to interact with other veterans in a social environment.
I have had the privilege of spending time with new arrivals and those who have been in the program awhile. Those who are new are often confused and by talking to them I can encourage them to keep their appointments with doctors, their HEP counselors and to participate in the social activities set up by the clubhouse coordinators. For those veterans who have been at HEP longer it is nice to talk to them about their progress. You can't imagine how great it is to see a veteran's confidence increase when he/she gets a job or is ready to move into an apartment.
HEP is very supportive of veterans and non-veterans and provides a very vital service in Pinellas County.
I am a volunteer and have found the staff and other volunteers to be caring, committed and cheerful. I enjoy my time spent with HEP.
HEP is an incredible organization and asset to our community. The staff is amazing and were so gracious in working with our family to schedule a time for my son and I along with a friend to serve dinner one Saturday. It was an opportunity for our son to learn about serving others and supporting our community. Thank you HEP for all you do!
I am a volunteer in the kitchen of HEP once a week. The staff are great to work with. The clients are very appreciative of the help of the volunteers. I find the HEP organization to be a caring well run organization that is helping to meet the needs of the homeless. I enjoy my time at HEP and find it very rewarding .
I came to h.e.p. seeking assistance in shelter, to transitional housing, to independent affordable living. However, from my move at Safe Harbor to H.E.P. I was given 30 days to accomplish my objectives. They (H.E.P.) could not transition me therefore H.E.P. had to move me back to Safe Habor where I have to live outside in pod 6 compared to pod 2 where I lived before H.E.P. allotted me the 30 day assistance. I have sought assistance in another State where I won't be caught up in the cycle of funding that prove limited.

Years ago when I was between jobs I volunteered at HEP in the after school program. I was so impressed with the kindness/humbleness of the staff, the beautiful well kept facilities and how the residents expressed their heart felt appreciation. I have volunteered at other homeless shelters and none of them come close to HEP.
Thank you for being there for so many in their time of greatest need!!
I am very happy to have the opportunity to volunteer at HEP. Mostly the benefit is knowing that the entire organization is assisting people to get their lives back together.
We have worked at HEP at the dental clinic, in the kitchen, and on special events for many years. We are amazed at how HEP has grown from the vision of one faithful couple to the complex and committed organization it is today!!
Hi! Homeless Empowerment Program is a game changer. The concept of meeting the individual where they are ( giving shelter, food, clothing, a Listening ear, understanding, and caring arms) but then to help the individual elevate their situation through several channels (counseling, training, etc) is priceless. I love being a partner of this awesome organization. People makes all the difference in the world!!
My husband, myself and our 2 sons ages 15 and 7 volunteer in the kitchen serving dinner on a regular basis as well as special events where volunteers are needed and we enjoy every minute! The staff treats the residents with such care and respect it is amazing to see.
I have volunteered in various ways in the past few years - starting with bringing my therapy dogs to the campus to visit with some of the residents. The volunteer coordinator(s) at the campus and all the staff are very friendly & easy to work with. We love the work that HEP does - keep it up!!
I love everything HEP does. They don't enable, they empower the less fortunate to lead productive lives and be self sustaining citizens again. I love to volunteer in the dental clinic and clean teeth and help them with oral hygiene matters.
I have volunteered as a tutor for those wanting their GED, and served at various functions. HEP does ant outstanding job of promoting the homeless community and helping them to achieve their personal goals.
HEP is undoubtedly the most comprehensive and most highly regarded housing and support services program for homeless populations in their entire continuum if not the state!
With such a history of hope restoration to those in need, its hard to find someone who hasn't heard of HEP. Just as the six degrees of separation theory (that everyone and everything is six or fewer steps away, by way of introduction) Sooner or later you will experience the "Six degrees of Hep" and the wonderful stories of lives changed for the better!
Has staff to assist clients with many needs and really get them prepared for independence in the community.
I am a nurse and have worked at HEP for 10 years. They are helping more each year by having more programs to meet the needs of the homeless from job coaches to mental health therapists. HEP focuses on helping the homeless population to help themselves and obtain housing when their time is completed at the shelter.
My first encounter with HEP was an invitation from a friend to attend a luncheon and guided tour. I was hooked from that day on! I started as a volunteer and now work as an Activity Coordinator in the Veteran's clubhouse. You hear about HEP and how they help the homeless, but until you get involved in some way, volunteering, working or supporting their efforts you cannot image the scope of what this organization does for individuals, veterans and families . Amazing!!!
HEP is such a wonderful organization, that truly helps so many people. I have firsthand seen what a difference they make on a daily basis. For the longest time, I had no idea that places like this existed, and am so grateful to have found this organization.
HEP makes a difference in so many lives. Great organization, great staff!

I have been involved with HEP since it began in 1986. I have watched her grow from a small shelter created to help those in need to one of the biggest and best shelters in the USA. We are so proud of the new building we have worked so hard for. I would invite everyone to come and take a look and see what we have accomplished and meet the people we help each and every day.

Have been Ministering to the Homeless Community in the Clearwater area for over Ten Years. I have seen a first hand experience, of how HEP is changing Lives. The people in need come in hardened and leave hopeful and moving in a productive motion. HEP is doing an amazing job.
I have worked in other organizations for the homeless, and NOT ONE compares to what HEP does for its clients. They are always there with a helping hand, and with all the resources that HEP has they have made a difference in thousands of people lives over the years. If you want to volunteer or donate the HEP is the place you want to check out.
You hear about HEP and how they help the homeless, but until you get involved in some way, volunteering, working or supporting their efforts you cannot image the scope of what this organization does for individuals, veterans and families . Amazing!!!
The innovation behind their services keeps HEP a cut above the rest in the progression of homeless prevention and assistance.
Watching the transformation of those who have lost their footing to having found steady ground is amazing. The hand-up not handout philosophy of HEP is empowering.
I have been with HEP for 29 years, first as a volunteer, then on the Board of Directors and as a full-time employee. I am very proud of all that we've accomplished. HEP has a great team of staff members and partners all striving to make HEP the last homeless shelter their clients will ever need.
I have been with HEP for 5 years. I am so proud to be a member of such a wonderful organization! Amazing staff, Leaders and Board. Love working with people who truly care about the people they are serving and clearly understand and believe in the mission and vision of the organization.
The positive outcomes that are generated through this great organization are amazing and life changing for those that benefit and for those that support those in need. It is wonderful to see such generosity in so many!
Working for the community currently. Always positive energy surrounded by the company and making sure everything that can be done IS done for each resident.
My husband and I have volunteered in the kitchen and with special fund-raising events at HEP for over a year. It is an incredible organization. They are respectful of and open to helping all people. Any staff we have encountered have been incredibly kind and compassionate and just fun people! We always look forward to any of our time spent helping out there. The food is pretty amazing, too!
HEP is one of the best! I get to see first hand just how much they do for their community and how much the volunteers mean and do for them. Always feeling so loved and blessed.
Always coming up with new ways to serve this population. Housing for veterans coupled with PTSD counseling and job training--just one of the newest ways to help those most in need to get back into the mainstream of life.
Great charity not only helping people in need, but equipping them with the skills needed to be independent. The organization continues to grow and expand services with community support. If you are fortunate enough to not need their services, consider volunteering some time and/or make a donation to this worthy cause.
I have worked with the homeless for 15 years and HEP is top notch in their forward thinking vision to provide a continuum of care for those who need it. I also spent time living as a resident of HEP when illness caused my life to take a detour. Now I work full time bringing wellness initiatives to the current residents.
HEP makes a tremendously big contribution to those in our community who benefit from their wide-ranging services. It is an efficient and well-run, compassionate and caring organization, and we have been grateful to have the opportunity to serve as food service volunteers for the past 4 months. We definitely plan to continue. Kudos to those who organize and lead this fine nonprofit!
I have been with HEP for 6 months and this is the best program and the best people with whom I have ever been associated.
i have volunteered for nearly a year, and find it rewarding to see how appreciative the people are that you are serving or assisting.. I also believe in the programs they have in place.
I have been volunteering at HEP since participating in Joe Maddons Thankmas project in July. It has been a distinct pleasure and an honor to serve our great veterans and family’s while working with some of the finest people I know. It has also been a privilege to be a small part of this great organization and to witness firsthand the life changing work they do. Thank you for all that you do HEP and may God bless you!
I have been with HEP a short time and I am impressed by everyone's team work and dedication to the organization. I am happy to be part of the HEP family.
I look at HEP as a life saver for so many men, women and children. It strengthens my heart to see what the HEP shelter can do for someone without making them fill ashamed or embarrassed. They help people help themselves. With all the services HEP provides, the person or family regain their self esteem. The have accepted the help of services that HEP gives with pride. They are on their way to becoming self sufficient. They want to give back to a community that has helped so many. The children have been assisted with school work and excelled with the school grades on report cards. I would give them the highest score possible because I have seen their work first hand and all the good that comes from it.
I am able to see first hand the direct impact that HEP, Inc. has on the community and the positive effect it cultivates with our clients. From helping clients getting re-established with their lives to housing to being given daily sustenance, HEP provides hope to many where there was none.
I have worked in several different states serving homeless in a variety of non-profit settings. The HEP model of service delivery and outcomes exceeds any program I have seen in my 26 years in the field.
In particular, the quality of housing, the breadth of case management, the holistic approach to serving all individuals, veterans and families in the expectation that this is the last homeless shelter they will ever need, are all exemplary. The public and private support locally and regionally helps maintain a viable infrastructure accountability to ensure the high standards of service continue to evolve and improve. The partnership with Bay Care Health Systems, the dental clinic and the Thrift Store voucher system are all components that I have not seen in other homeless non profits; these programs really increase the quality of life for all residents!
I have observed HEP from the early years when HEP transitioned from a feeding program to one offering more comprehensive solutions to homelessness. Their dedication has been exceptional. They have always concentrated on results and have been an immeasurable asset to our community. Needless to say, I am a fan.
My professional career has been in the non-profit world for over 24 years. I've known about the good works of HEP for years but did not realize the full scope of their outreach until I became a staff member. The dedication from the staff makes a huge difference in the lives of the clients they serve. For the past year- and- a- half I have witnessed first hand HEP's staunch commitment to the homeless population. Come and check us out your life will be forever changed.
I came to Clearwater in October 1997 dying from complications of a lung tumor with only three months to live! So, I had been told by a doctor a month earlier. I was sober, but living in my car at the Seminole Marina. I was referred to HEP by a friend and accepted. Wow! Danna Slaughter was my conselor who showed me how to Help Myself! Watching Dana and Pat work cleaning these apartments astonished me. They seemed tireless and always in good cheer. So Godly, both of them.
Otis always had time to say hello. Barbara was a no nonsense person who I came to dearly love.
Within two weeks I had medical care, and a primary physician! Doctor Johnston fitted me with new dentures...after he removed what was left in my mouth! Gulf Coast Legal Services obtained my SSI for me - thank you Pamela Wiener!
One of my best memories is the Christmas Party on the old and beautuful Gazebo where Jim played Santa and gave out presents to over two hundred people including many, many children!
So many fond memories of HEP! I was fortunate to live in three of their transitional houses. Two of which I had my own private room. Finally after 7 1/2 years I moved on to a wonderfu place called Creekside Manor I. Looking back on the past 16 years I can say that I've learned to live within my means and get closer to God almighty.
I stop by and visit the Thrift shop once a month now, always hoping to catch a glimpse of some staff person I had known over the years. In essence: HEP is the best thing that's ever happened to me...and I am healthier than I've been in thirty years! 75 next month and 23 years sober!!!... Ron Smokey Townson
I had enjoyed shopping at the thrift store for years. I began volunteering several months ago, and through that I have come to understand what a great charity this organization is. The help that is given to the people in need is truly remarkable, and it appears to be done with amazing skill and compassion. Everyone is committed to the same thing, and it truly shows.
They give the clients opportunities to better themselves by giving them the support and confidence to better themselves.
Everybody's Tabernacle/HEP is the very best run shelter in the USA. This was my home church for over 50 years. I have personally seen them grow from helping one church member to the multiservie org it is today. I ask Prearcher(our founder) how the organization had grown over the years. He said "the more I give, the more God gives back to me? Love all of you at ET & HEP. Barb Poynter
I have worked in the social service community for 33 years and for the first time in my career, I find myself working in a
I have a BA in psychology with 20 years of experience working with a variety of people with mental disorders and substance abuse, including the homeless population. I am a current staff member, employed by BayCare who is partnered with HEP to provide SHOP services through a 5 year grant. I was impressed in coming to HEP because the organization has grown to it's current program and assisted thousands of people gain a new start.
I volunteer in the Learning Center at HEP on weekly basis during the school year. I help with homework, talk with the kids, and help them with their community service projects. They send cards and pictures to the USO, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Children's Cancer Center. In 2008 they held a golf tournament to raise money so they could give back to their community. In 2009 they got involved with the Relay for Life and they decorated luminaria bags, participated in the Kids Walk, and cleaned up after the event. In 2009 they sponsored a young boy that had a heart transplant and wanted to go to golf camp. Working with them several times a week and seeing how generous they are with their time and good works is very touching especially considering their situations. Its very rewarding to see the children learn and grow as they attend the Center each day.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Barb Green for the past 17 years and can't say enough good things about the Homeless Emergency Project. Barb and her late husband, Pastor Otis Green, were homeless advocates long before most of us had the issue on our radar screen. They realized that, through an unfortunate illness, injury or downturn in the economy, virtually anyone could find himself or herself homeless. HEP doesn't just provide housing, food and health care for its clients, it gives them a reason to hope and to become self-sufficient again. It's a model to be admired and replicated.
My name is Mr. Mullins, and I was a client at HEP! They helped me to get my disability when I could not keep work, or access any work, because of my health, and not being able to work past the usual 90day trial period! I lost everything, and I mean everything! HEP provided me with food and shelter until I could get back on my feet again! They are "ANGELS FROM HEAVEN", as far as I am concerned! I am now on my own, and have an appartment by myself, a car, and a means of supporting myself financially! Thanks be to God and HEP! I now volunteer in the Thrift Store there doing watch repair! I am no professional, but I donate my time there, and it is greatly appreciated! I also donate watches that I fix, and Merry & Dennis who appreciate my time and donations! Thanks is not enough for what HEP has done for me!!! That is why I donate my time! God has given me a gift, and I do what i can to give back! It seems fitting to close with my favorite quote by Robert J. Burdett..(and I live by this quote)... Don't think the world owes you a living! The world owes you nothing! IT WAS HERE FIRST! RE: I had nothing in this world, but thanks to the Homeless Emergency Project, I am self sufficiant again! :-) God Bless!
It is extremely rewarding being a volunteer at HEP. Having volunteered at various organizations, I sm most impressed with the way HEP functions. In meeting the needs of those less fortunate, they go the extra mile in every way & manner. At all times the residents are shown understanding along with a sense of dignity & respect. Therefore, they do not feel as oucasts, but rather a part of a warm & caring facility.
The Homeless Emergency Project does it's best to ensure all of it's residents recieve the highest quality of care. The staff are heartwarming and show a desire to help. Most importantly, each guest is treated with the respect that they deserve. I myself have been a kitchen volunteer since June 2009. All of the food served to the residents is made fresh from scratch. There is always a wonderful aroma coming from the kitchen. When I'm serving lunch, helping around the kitchen, or helping prepare the meals, I can sense enthusiasm from everyone around me. The fun atmosphere and heartwarming residents are what inspire me to return and volunteer each week.
My experience with HEP began a few years ago when my high school age daughter informed me of her service to the community through HEP. She suggested that I might serve the community through this volunteer outreach. For the last few months I have worked under Merry and Dennis Shaw who head up the thrift store. This ongoing experience exceeds my expectations. During my short time there I have come to appreciate the devotion, committment, and Christian testimony mainly of the two people who manage the work, Mrs. and Mr. Shaw, but also of the entire ministry team. The Shaws not only work hard to provide a clean and well managed store (I have worked retail management in the past so I know the work involved) but the patrons and clients look to them as Christian examples as well as professional store management. Not only is the thrift store a ministry, but practically speaking, it must be operated as a business as well. I am proud to serve with such honest, genuine, caring, examples of Christ's love. I truly believe the thrift store is providing much more than just re-sales of products. The customers get to see first hand how well the whole HEP operates. The team there is a fine example of the most positive aspects of the church in my community.
I have been a volunteer and board member for over 8 years! HEP is a wonderful organazation that has helped countless individuals and families who due to an many hardships including mental illness, physical illness of a child or bread winner found themselves on the streets unable to make ends meet. The compassionate staff day after day do wonderful work to lift the burdens these people carry and help them make their own way in the world again. This is a full service homeless shelter and there are so many services that are provided that go far beyond the name.
As a weekly volunteer at HEP I have am blessed to see so many individuals given an opportunity to turn their lives around. The caring, compassionate and knowledgeable staff are what makes this homeless shelter feel like a structured family environment. So many of the clients served here need and have never had the support, strength and love that this organization champions to succeed in life. The many programs HEP offer are geared to not only teach residents to become self sufficient, but instill a sense of respect and responsibility to oneself, to family and to our community.
My experinece as a volunteer with the Homeless Emergency Project has been the most rewarding part of my life. Working with homeless veterans has been so rewarding. I think that HEP does a marvelous job in caring for the homeless.
