The Harlem Center for Education, Inc. is all about people and community. Their involvement in education is a pathway to enable and empower people and improve and enrich community. For 40 years they have been using donations and grant dollars to help thousands of youth earn their high school diplomas and advance to higher education. Community helping community—what could be better?
My sister provided administrative and moral support to the Harlem Center For Education, Inc. for many years as a staff member. She did that because of two reasons, she believed in the Executive Director, Paula Martin and she believed in the mission of the organization. Harlem Center For Education has been unwavering in giving young people the opportunity to achieve, excel and go beyond their expectations by utilizing a vehicle called education. I have attended field trips, performances and countless award ceremonies and I have always been impressed with the high level of self-esteem and affirmation that the Harlem Center for Education instills in the hearts and minds of Harlem youth.
From my experience being the Middle School Coordinator for the Harlem Center for Education, Inc (HCE) for 5 years, allow me to exercise my dream of giving back to my community. One special quality of HCE's services is that it gives middle school and high school students, and adults services that are quickly dwindling away from the nonprofit sector. Services like free adult tutoring for the GED exam, Free SAT classes on Saturdays, and Free trips to out-of-state colleges for both middle school and high school participants. The biggest impact of HCE is seeing students I serviced going off to college, emailing me, and visiting our office during their semester breaks. It is through their success that we have been able to thrive for 40 years!
