During the last quarter of 2020 a single mother of 2 who I provide free budgeting, employment, and housing case management services to, contacted me in a very emotional state. Her dilemma/fear was that she would not be able to compile required documentation with a housing application that was required to be hand-delivered to a Habitat for Humanity site in the Portland area by a Saturday deadline. Her greatest concern was incurring an occurence at work for unplanned time off, that would result in a loss of good standing with her employer. After confering on how the reward far out weighed the work occurence, we began to problem solve. Only 1 need remained - that was hand delivering her completed packet to the non-profit on the deadline date. Positive communications and incitement for my client to start/complete their process were shared with me. They were so affirming. Appreciating this was not just a home purchase opportunity, but as well a solution to permanently and significantly reducing recurring monthly housing cost to align with the recommended 30 % maximum of monthly income designated for recurring rental/mortgate cost. The acquisition as well would be an asset that would build wealth that's transferable to her 2 heirs. Last, and maybe most importantly it would afford her flexibility to lose a shift premium to move to a work shift that permits more nuturing time with her children. It was an easy decision for me to instead take the sanction from an unplanned absence, and turn in the paperwork for her. A fairly quick, but unexpected UNAPPROVED decision was rendered. The reason cited is that there were other applicants who demonstrated "more need". It was informed "more need" included applicants who had an existing safety-net via their Section 8 Housing Voucher, and 2 parent families with only 1 adult working.
