Mission: Recognizing big changes in the way employers put people to work, Bay Area Goodwill organizations teamed up with a philanthropic venture of the George Roberts Foundation, the Roberts Enterprise Development Fund (www.redf.org), to start GSS in 1998. Owned jointly by Goodwill Industries of San Francisco and Goodwill Industries of the Greater East Bay, GSS is a social purpose enterprise that provides temporary and contract staffing services. As an employer driven business, GSS hires people who possess the skills to meet customer orders. As a social purpose enterprise, GSS hires people with barriers to employment and funds Goodwill training programs from all additional income generated.
Programs: In addition to operations generated by internal sales, service, and support, GSS is launching: 1) Oakland Neighborhood CIRCLES - Comprehensive Integrated Resources for CalWORKs Limited English Speakers, in association with the East Bay Local Development Corporation, for Round Three of DOL's WtW Competitive Grant Program. CIRCLES will help 300 welfare recipients transition from welfare to work through paid work experience and training. 2) Goodwill Industries International's Census 2000 Project for DOL - Nationally coordinated project to train and employ thousands of people with barriers to employment for DOL's Census 2000. 3) San Mateo County R.A.P. Program - Goodwill and GSS's Retention, Advancement, and Replacement Program to serve San Mateo County's underemployed former and current welfare recipients, providing expanded job opportunities and skill training.
