Causes: Community Foundations, Philanthropy
Mission: To enhance the quality of life and general health of residents living in the west umatilla and morrow county communities. Resources are provided to worthy projects best illustrating foundation ideals and fulfilling the health needs of our designated region.
Programs: Golf tournament and other designated programs and events to fund projects in keeping with our mission. In december 2016 we partnered with hermiston morning kiwanis club and sponsored the festival of trees, receiving over 19,000 in net proceeds for the foundation at this annual fundraiser. The following statements indicate the grants and scholarships awarded during the 2016-2017 fiscal year. The organization's form 990, schedule i will only report what was actually paid out during the fiscal year. Therefore, the following amounts may not reconcile with the form 990, schedule i reporting due to the timing of post secondary school curriculums and grant need requirements. In june 2017, we held our annual scramble for scholarships golf tournament and raised 24,159 specifically to fund medical students in the community seeking health care careers. In may 2017, the foundation awarded 29,992 in scholarship funds to twenty-five medical students. One 3,000 scholarship for nursing psychiatry, two 3,000 scholarships for bachelors of nursing, one 3,000 scholarship for nursing management, two 2,000 scholarships for business administration /health options, and two 2,000 scholarships for nursing were given to gshcs employees seeking advanced training. Other scholarships include: one scholarship for 2,200 to a vascular ultrasound student attending oregon institute of technology, one scholarship for 2,200 to a diagnostic imaging student at linn benton community college, one 2,000 scholarship to a student in physical therapy at university of montana, and one 2,000 scholarship for a student in psychology/counseling attending corban university. One scholarship for 1,000 was awarded to a student in radiology attending blue mountain community college, one scholarship for 1,000 in radiology for a student attending portland community college, one 1,000 scholarship in psychiatry to a pacific university student, one 1,000 scholarship in pharmacy to a blue mountain community college student, one 1,000 scholarship to a bachelor of nursing student attending grand canyon university, one 1,000 scholarship awarded to a bachelor of nursing student at blue mountain community college, and one 1,000 scholarship to a nursing student at blue mountain community college. Other scholarships awarded were to a medical engineering student attending university of portland for 500, a 500 scholarship for an orthodontist student attending oregon state university, one dentistry student scholarship for 500 to a student at idaho state university, one scholarship of 500 for a nursing student at george fox university, one 500 scholarship to a nursing student to attend blue mountain community college, and one 500 scholarship to a medical biology student attending oregon state university. Foundation grants are awarded twice a year in october and april. Grants totaling 166,689 were awarded this fiscal year as follows: 49,682 in grants were made to five designated charitable recipients including: eastern oregon university, blue mountain community college, vange john memorial hospice, domestic violence west end project, and humane society of eastern oregon from the interest on a bequest from the mary ellen paul trust. Other grants made by good shepherd community health foundation this fiscal year include: 2,659 irrigon jr/sr high school for volleyball and exercise equipment. 5,200 made to thrive to fund ayso soccer & equine therapy for disadvantaged youth. 1,500 capeco for project community connect & veteran's stand down event. 750 america youth soccer organization to provide first aid kits to 76 teams. 2,100 umatilla police department to fund a secure lock box for prescription disposal. 15,000 hermiston fire & emergency services to fund a replacement cardiac monitor. 5,945 umatilla county sheriff's office for automated external defibrillators (aeds). 20,000 hermiston school district for kennison field track. 10,000 riverside jr/sr high school to repair and resurface a school/community track. 4,000 willow creek park district for outdoor exercise equipment in a mixed-use park. 5,000 oregon state university extension to support family health & fitness day. 15,000 city of hermiston parks & recreation to fund a disc golf & fitness project. 6,000 echo school district to equip the community center with fitness equipment. 10,000 gshcs carevan transportation service to increase hours of access and service. In december 2016, the foundation again sponsored the "christmas spirit award. " this award solicited nominations from the community to identify individuals who represented the spirit of christmas; a spirit of giving throughout the year. Selected as the 2016 award recipients were cathy putnam and virginia miller.
