Programs: Friends of la jolla shores is a non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to enhance and preserve our public parks, beaches, unique coastal community and marine environment while promoting related educational experiences and recreational activities. We have spent the past year finalizing negotiations with the city of san diego and california coastal commission to repair the 2,300 square foot plaza known as the "the map" of the la jolla underwater park & ecological reserve, depicting the area just offshore. Brailsford public art is in the process of fabricating the $750,000 lithomosaic installation. All aspects of design and construction of "the map" will be overseen and funded jointly by friends of la jolla shores and the walter munk foundation for the oceans, both local non-profits. "the map" is a unique educational tool that will be enjoyed by children of all ages from our local community and the millions of visitors who come each year to kellog park. It will be used as an on-site classroom for divers, surfers, and kayakers, a field trip destination for local schools, and an off-site classroom setting by the birch aquarium at scipps institute of oceanography, uc san diego.
