The 14th Street Community Center has really grown over the past few years. They have increased their programs and volunteers. There are so many things going on there. The kids are still fed after school and with nutritous meals and are given food to take home for the weekend. They have a dedicated art insructor, counseling, homework help, gardening, retreats, exercise programs, ceramics, dance classes, mentoring, basketball programs, and they have added on programs for seniors. Recently, they have delivered meals daily prepared at the center to seniors so they don't have to leave their homes during the pandemice and provided them with lots of educational opportunities with their health. The Director of the community center, Ms. Maxine Malone, is on it! I find it so refreshing to watch these kids learn and be mentored by such caring adults. The center has a diverse board of directors who have a real passion in see these kids succeed.

I'm a student volunteer, since this was my first time volunteering anywhere I don't have a good base of knowledge to adequately judge 14th St. But what they do is amazing for kids that have little after school opportunity. The kids are helped with homework, they have a safe in door place to play with kids their age, the modern building is impressive and is put to good use. The administrators there have a lot on their hands with 20-40 kids, but are white on rice with misbehaving kids. Near the end of the day the kids are fed plenty (though the foods not very nutritious, it's usually some cook meat on bread with a snack food and juice drink) to where they might not eat when they go home. They even have a computer lap where the kids can preform computer assisted learning, or just browse the web. They have little in the way of volunteers, the nights when I go, I'm the only volunteer and I know of only a handful that go other times. Most importantly this center provides a crucial environment for after school activity for under privileged kids to learn to avoid street and domestic violence, learn life skills the value of community, friendship and education.
